I received this booklet the day before I was to take the certification test. I passed with a score of 87%. Working in the air duct cleaning business, I had a general idea of the proper procedure, but this book helped with the little details I was missing (including how to take a test)! I honestly don't think I would have passed without it!

Very well written

This book is a beginning text on how we might better manage conflicts in our daily lives. We all have conflicts in our lives, with spouses, co-workers, friends, family and more. Most of us never think about how we might approach these conflicts. What I especially like about the approach used in this book is the way the authors have come up with dozens of case studies or situations. They are short but to the point. They are used to illustrate the theoretical points that the authors are discussing at the time.

For instance:

A Navy ship sees they are in a collision course with another ship and radio them: Alter your course ten degrees to the north, we are a battleship. The other ship replies: We’re a lighthouse, suggest you alter course.

This is to illustrate that assumptions might be at the base of a conflict and that explaining the true situation might be a much better than fighting. The Navy would not like it if someone ran their battleship into the rocks around the lighthouse. Retaining the thought about the battleship hitting the rocks will help you remember about assumptions.

Naturally I bought this because I had to for a BSU class. Good news- the chapters are small and easily cram-able for quiz. Nothing worse than taking up space just to take up space. Did I get enough words for Amazon review?

What should the nation's grand strategy look like for the next several decades? The end of the cold war profoundly and permanently altered the international landscape, yet we have seen no parallel change in the aims and shape of U.S. foreign policy. The Peace of Illusions intervenes in the ongoing debate about American grand strategy and the costs and benefits of "American empire." Layne urges the desirability of a strategy he calls "offshore balancing": rather than wield power to dominate other states, the U.S. government should engage in diplomacy to balance large states against one another. The United States should intervene, Layne asserts, only when another state threatens, regionally or locally, to destroy the established balance. Drawing on extensive archival research, Layne traces the form and aims of U.S. foreign policy since 1940, examining alternatives foregone and identifying the strategic aims of different administrations. His offshore-balancing notion, if put into practice with the goal of extending the "American Century," would be a sea change in current strategy. Layne has much to say about present-day governmental decision making, which he examines from the perspectives of both international relations theory and American diplomatic history.

A must read for those interested in Americian foreign policy

An excellent book, well-researched and written. Layne dissects American foreign policy, since the end of XIXth Century, and shows how American intervention and presence in Europe and Asia is much more pervasive than many think. Especially relating to Europe, his book is brilliant. As to Asia, due to some specificities, I thought the analysis (although meticulous) was not so successful as to Europe. All and all, one of the best books in International Relations I've read.

The Peace of Illusions may be the most important book on America's security strategy published in the last decade. Layne accomplishes three difficult feats, when achieving even one would have been impressive. He provides a controversial yet well-documented interpetation of U.S. grand strategy since the end of the 1930s. At the same time, he shows convincingly that Washington's current approach to world affairs does not serve the best interests of the American people and is ultimately doomed to failure. Finally, he articulates an alternative grand strategy--"offshore balancing"--that would reduce America's costs and risks and prove to be far more sustainable.

In his historical analysis, Layne argues that the United States has consistently pursued global dominance since the early days of World War II. Probably the most controversial thesis in the Peace of Illusions is the argument that Washington would have embraced such a strategy during the Cold War era even if the Soviet Union had not existed. Layne attributes much of the U.S. drive for global hegemony to the goal of maintaining a liberal world economic order--the "open door." In advancing that thesis, he builds on the work of a number of "revisionist" historians and economists, most notably William Appleman Williams. Critics may contend, with some justification, that Layne overstates the open door thesis and does not give sufficient weight to other factors, including the impact of crusading idealism on U.S. policymakers. Nevertheless, it is hard to rebut his case that the United States, instead of adopting a more sober and restrained foreign policy following the demise of the USSR, has expanded both the definition of its interests and the aggressivness of its pursuit of those interests. Washington's conduct since 1989 tracks perfectly with a strategy of global hegemony.

Layne does an even better job of demonstrating how Washington's current security strategy is needlessly costly in blood and treasure. His analysis of the Iraq debacle is especially devastating, but he shows that Iraq is not an aberration. The current imperial overstretch is now, and promises to be in the future, a bipartisan folly. Layne builds a compelling case that a hegemonic strategy has invariably led to the demise of previous great powers, and that a similar fate awaits the United States unless there is a change in course.

And Layne has an appealing alternative security strategy--America as offshore balancer. Other scholars have used different terms, such as strategic independence and balancer of last resort, to describe such a strategy, but the principles remain the same. Instead of trying to be the global policeman (or even worse, the global armed social worker), the United States needs to adopt a more selective and restrained foreign policy. Contrary to proponents of the current policy, this alternative is not "isolationism"--a vacuous slur designed to stifle intelligent debate. It is, however, a policy that focuses on defending America's vital interests instead of trying to remake the entire planet in America's image at the point of bayonets or cruise missiles. Layne does an extremely good job of building the case for an alternative grand strategy.

The Peace of Illusions is one of those rare books that anyone who is interested in America's future in the international system needs to read. It is a book that should spark a badly overdue debate on the direction of U.S. foreign policy.

About the Author

Jerry R. Thomas, EdD, is professor and dean of the College of Education at the University of North Texas. Besides writing the previous editions of this book, Thomas has authored more than 200 publications, over 120 of which are refereed publications, with numerous contributions in research methods. Awarded the C.H. McCloy Lecturer in 1999, based on his career research production, Thomas has served as editor in chief for Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport and as a reviewer for most major research journals in kinesiology and numerous journals in psychology. He has also served as president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, American Kinesiology Association, AAHPERD Research Consortium, and of the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. He was named an AAHPERD Alliance Scholar in 1990 and NASPSPA Distinguished Scholar in 2003, based on lifetime achievement in research.

Jack K. Nelson, EdD, is professor emeritus in the department of kinesiology at Louisiana State University. Nelson conducted and published research and taught research methods for 35 years. He has advised more than 50 doctoral dissertations and more than 50 masters' theses. In addition, he has more than 80 publications and has served as editor of research publications. A fellow in the Research Consortium, he has been a member of AAHPERD, the American Educational Research Association, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He has also served as president of the Association for Research, Administration, Professional Councils and Societies (now AAALF) and as vice president of AAHPERD.

Stephen Silverman, EdD, has taught and written about research methods for over 25 years. He is a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and he has conducted research on teaching in physical education focusing on how children learn motor skill and develop attitudes. He has published more than 60 research articles in addition to many books and book chapters. Silverman is a fellow and past president of both the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Research Consortium, and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). A former coeditor of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education and editor in chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Silverman was an AERA Physical Education Scholar Lecturer, a Research Consortium Scholar Lecturer, and Weiss Lecturer for AAHPERD.

Written for programs who don't really do research. Written poorly/brief/remedial. If you want to do research read J. Creswell. Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches

Kindle version issues

The kindle version is not the best. It does not have page numbers which is really a drag when your teacher tells you to look at page 207 or whatever. Other kindle books I have do have the page numbers and there needs to be a way to put page numbers in for text books. Even if it is an estimate. Also, the figures are terrible and blurry. One table we used a lot in class, couldn't even make out the numbers. Amazon can do better.

improvements

Having personally used the 5th edition in a recent class, I found several typos and offered a couple suggestions regarding an appendix of symbols and easier access to pertinent formulas which in the 5th edition were difficult to locate in the text. These were conveyed from my professor to the authors, and improvements in ease of use were made. Good luck, researchers!!

Practical indeed, very usable, and an interesting read beyond one's own domain.

In the last 50 years there are two things that have emerged in a technological world. First, applied mathematics has moved much more into numerical methods than in trying to solve problems analytically. The second thing that has emerged is that computing has both led and followed the numerical computing revolution. Python, amongst languages, is arguably a language with links to optimized code (such as C or Fortran) plus a language capable of a plethora of tasks, including scientific calculation, statistical modelling, network analysis, machine learning, language processing, and so forth. Johansson's book fits beautifully into a niche where serious science or other endeavour requires both some cookbook code and explanation of some basics. This book steps beautifully through from setting up to topics that will help a person with intermediate mathematical understanding and basic Python programming skill implement practical and useful code. There is a coding consistency that allows the user to add and modularise code blocks, if required. There is the support of code online. As a fairly critical consumer of literature purporting to be of practical industry use, my sense is that this book exceeds expectations.

Daily dozen

The author of this book is one of my heroes from my youth. Bob Hoffman and the York Barbell Company were the main reason I began lifting back in the '60's before athletes were allowed to lift weights. While the book has no new truths, I have enjoyed the view of Mr. Hoffman takes in his belief of exercise. Anyone interested in fitness, health, and vitality would benefit from making the "Daily Dozen" a daily habit.

Good Conditioning Program

Although written in 1958, the information is surprisingly current, probably because it relies on very basic principles. The recommended "daily dozen" is half bodyweight exercises, followed by six basic barbell movements. The author recommends performing the barbell exercises as what he labels compound movements of three exercises each. The barbell exercises are basic enough to be readily adaptable to the use of dumbells or kettlebells. I have followed Hoffman's program for almost a month, and found it to be very beneficial for overall conditioning, which is its stated purpose.

Good simple old-school workout, but no illustrations

Mr. Hoffman summarizes in plain language a practical workout, including stretches and barbell weights, that can be done fairly quickly each day. Much of his commentary about society being unhealthy as a result of modern conveniences, holds true today even more than it did when he wrote this (in the 1950's?).

My only complaint is that the Kindle book does not include the illustrations that the author refers to. However, he is very descriptive in explaining how to perform the exercises, so I'm only deducting 1 star as a result.
