Not a bad intro, but take it with a grain of salt

Firstly, the author should be commended for even attempting to condense such a vast and complex subject as the history of China into a single volume. On the whole, it is an accessible account which will give an introductory understanding of many parts of China's history.

However, the book gives the impression that the supporting research was done in a great hurry, and contains errors, inconsistincies, and a number of sensational conclusions, some of which are not supported by sufficient evidence. It was therefore little wonder to me when I learned that the author is, in fact, a journalist and not a historian. It seems as though the author has attempted to make some attention-grabbing statements in a clumsy attempt to turn Chinese history on its head.

I will give just three examples of the kind of sloppiness that I have referred to. 1) One theory, which is entirely undeveloped apart from a small amount of hypothesising on the part of the author, is that the Great Wall did not prevent northern tribes from entering China and was never designed for this purpose. In stating this, the author appears unaware of the extraordinary career and accomplishments of Qi Jiguang, perhaps China's greatest military leader of the Ming (or any other) period. He built, and successfully defended the Great Wall against all comers. Although it was never intended to be an entirely defensive structure, and although no one other than Qi Jiguang was able to defend China's northern frontier as he did, this hardly validates the author's sensational theory 2) the portrayal of Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai-Shek) as a collaborator in the Long March of the CCP ignores the fact that he hated the CCP, wanted it to be eradicated from the face of the Earth, and had expended an enormous amount of political and military effort in attempting to defeat them. For Jiang to sit back and watch the Long March, while "shepherding" the CCP to its new northern base under duress from the Soviet Union, runs counter to everything that we know about Jiang's struggle with the CCP 3) the author states that Jesuit missionaries in China attempted a top-down conversion of the Chinese empire to Christianity, which is a misconception of the kind that you would expect from someone who only reads headlines - while the Jesuit missionaries spent substantial efforts attempting to win imperial recognition and support, the vast majority of their work was focussed on the Chinese countryside.

I readily admit that I am no expert on any period of Chinese history. However, the fact that even someone in my position can easily see some of the flaws in the author's arguments only shows how circumspect the reader needs to be in approaching this book. I would guess that someone who really is an expert on Chinese history would find many more flaws.

This book is useful as a basic outline of Chinese history, but is flawed in at least some, probably many, of its details, and needs to be supplemented with other sources to gain a more balanced and informed view of the topics covered.

A very readable account

John Keay is correct in observing that Chinese history is often impenetrable to all but the specialist. Yet it is an important and ancient history and one many people would like to know more about. So he has set out to do for China what he did for India in India: A History and make it accessible to an English speaking audience.

THis is a well written account of a fascinating country and its people. It does what few books do which is to ignore the present and instead give the past a fair shake in terms. There is no telescoping the narrative so that the last hundred years gets half the book, instead the las thundred years of Chinese history receives just a few dozen pages, giving the reader the correct impression that China's past is as important as her present.

In general the book also gives the reader a great deal of handy charts to keep track of dynasties and people. A very well written account,

Complete, descriptive, objective

I bought and read this book because I am Chinese but know nothing about Chinese history (having grown up in Australia), so I was probably always going to enjoy this book.

After reading this book, I've learnt that China's history is very complicated, but Keay does a fantastic job to provide objectively a good picture of each era. He is very descriptive on the important moments in Chinese history (it's impossible to fit every moment of Chinese history in a book of this size), so after reading this book, the reader is likely to remember these important points in Chinese history.

The maps are also very helpful to get an idea of all the warfare that was going on. I thought more maps would have even been better, and more pictures/portraits/photos (e.g. of important emperors and other leaders) would have also been good as it puts a face to a name.

I am not a frequent reader, but I can still tell that Keay chooses his words carefully and skillfully. I had to reach for the dictionary plenty of times. Hopefully someone with a better vocabulary base can appreciate this aspect more than myself.

Anger can be thrown outward on everybody and everything or pushed inward mostly doing inner damage but eventually seeping out sideways and doing damage to others as well. Boundaries are crossed, relationships damaged and enormous stress wreck havoc within and throughout our lives. Chapman reveals the how and the why and more importantly the what now and where do I go in practical ways to tame this emotion. This should be in every small group, Sunday school, or Wed night study starting up this fall. Bravo!!"

Anger CAN be Good!

Anger gets a bad rap. It’s often pictured as wild, out of control, and consuming. Think about the latest Disney movie, Inside Out. Anger is depicted as short (denoting little patience), red (a fiery, bold color), gruff, and easily knocked out of control. But if anger could be a good thing? With that bold premise, Gary Chapman, best known for his Five Love Languages books, tackles the topic of anger and how to control it.

Gary Chapman’s first couple of chapters builds the argument that anger is not inherently negative, but can be controlled and tamed and released positively. Anger, he writes, is something that we experience because we are made in the image of God and God experiences anger as well. However, God’s anger is wholly positive and just, an appropriate reaction to sin or injustice. We, as fallen creatures, have perverted anger to make it something negative and petty.

Anger, therefore, should stem from our sense of moral concern. It should arise in us when our sense of morality is shaken. He talks about the righteous anger of Jesus, the anger against drunk driving that led to the creation of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the anger against slavery that led to its abolition, and more. Anger, properly controlled, is a powerful force for good.

The following chapters deal with difference aspects of anger, from how to control and release good anger to how to control and restrain bad anger. Chapman also discusses specific relationships: anger against God, anger against a spouse, even anger against oneself. He covers both quick-tempered anger that builds quickly and festering grudges that slowly poison. One of my favorite chapters his chapter on teaching children how to handle anger (it applies to us older ones too!). The closing chapter also does a great job in explaining best practices for dealing with angry people (an excellent resource for anyone in the service industry!).

Each chapter (after the first two) ends with a Quick Take recap that summarizes and distills the content down into its bare bones structure. For example his quick take on handling anger:

Consciously acknowledge to yourself that you are angry.
Restrain your immediate response.
Locate the focus of your anger.
Analyze your options.
Take constructive action.

Falls Short, But Has Good Things

Gary Chapman is an evangelical Christian counselor. This book is about how people can handle anger.

According to Chapman, anger is something that God has given us, for it can entail being upset at injustice, and this can lead to change for the good. At the same time, Chapman acknowledges that anger is not always about injustice, for it can be about personal inconvenience, or it can result from a misunderstanding. Chapman states that there are at least two ways to deal with anger at a person. First, one can hold the anger back and give the person over to God, who is just, compassionate, and aware of where people are. Proverbs 29:11, after all, states that the wise quietly hold back their anger. Chapman later criticizes bottling anger up and letting it implode; whether that contradicts this piece of his advice, I do not know. Second, one can tactfully confront the person, which accords with other biblical passages, particularly in the Gospel of Matthew. Confrontation provides the offender with an opportunity to apologize, repent, and try to change his or her behavior, or to offer clarification in case of misunderstanding. Chapman also discusses strategies in dealing with angry people: the key here, according to Chapman, is to listen to the angry person. This, I think, is an important insight, for an angry person can easily alienate other people and be in a state of loneliness and isolation.

There is a rhyme and reason to what Chapman recommends. I, for one, struggle with confronting people, but I can understand why Chapman would recommend such a course. For a variety of reasons, however, I am doubtful that such a course will always make a person feel better, for it is not a one-size-fits-all strategy. Some people do not care if they offend others because they are jerks. You find plenty of these on the Internet. I do not think that such people would be receptive were I to tell them that they hurt my feelings in a comment. In some cases, confrontation may not be appropriate. Chapman mentions a person who was angry because he was laid off. Should that person go to his boss and explain why he is angry with him? I cannot picture that as an appropriate response. Sometimes the issue is not who is at fault or who sinned but may relate to different interests, personalities, preferences, or frustrated hopes and expectations. I may be upset because a person stopped following my blog, for example, but that is no reason for me to confront that person: it is not as if the person is morally obligated to follow my blog. Chapman’s advice on confrontation would probably work in friendships and family relationships, and maybe other situations, such as when a person is slandering someone (and Chapman presents a story about that). It will not redress all situations that make a person angry, however, and, in light of that, I wish that Chapman offered more strategies on how to deal with anger. One strategy that Chapman would probably recommend is prayer, and, while that may be effective, Chapman should have provided outlooks that people could embrace to help them rise above their anger.

The book, in my opinion, falls short, but I did appreciate Chapman’s compassionate, understanding tone towards people who struggle with anger, and also the stories that he shared.

Helpful book on anger if...

If you are a good, loving and rational person who lives around other good loving and rational people and you occasionally feel anger but aren't known for being an angry person, then I believe this book will prove quite helpful to you. On the other hand, if you are someone who was raised in an abusive family (or lack of one) and have grown up with a brain that is hard-wired for angry and destructive behavior and despite all efforts, you feel like you will always have this "thorn," then I think this book will have some helpful points but you aren't really the intended audience here.

As someone who falls into the latter category, I still think this is a good read and some of the practicals were helpful. I liked and have used the 5-step processes Dr Chapman presents for handling the two types of anger (essentially, justified and unjustified anger). And yet, that 5 step process is best played out in a near-perfect scenario. If you throw in young emotional children, a wife who is afraid of upsetting you because of your past behavior, a typical lifestyle of a busy family, or even a partner that isn't completely loving and rational, then things don't work out as nicely.

I also appreciated Dr Chapman's stance on what anger is - not a sin to run far far away from, but rather a red-light telling you that something isn't right and you need to find out what that is and make peace with it. I find this is a healthy perspective on facing and working through anger. One option that Dr Chapman offers for working through anger is to "give it to God." I understand what he is trying to say there, but I wish he would flesh this concept out a bit more. It felt like this was something you do when all else fails and you have no where else to go - i.e. just "pray it away and you'll be fine." I suppose this is one more clue that this book was written for a more reasonable balanced and loving audience rather than those who have deeper issues to uncover.

For those like me, I'd like to recommend another book that has helped me greatly: Why Can't I Change?: How to Conquer Your Self-Desctructive Patterns. All the best to those in their life-long journey to be more like Jesus.

brute encounter with the reality of war

Ok. So I read this book when I was in 10th grade while I lived in Iran back in 1973. It was a Persian translation from the Italian version. It was one of the best books I ever remember that I have read about the Vietnam War. Brutally real and first hand description of all three sides: American, French and Vietcong. Fallaci gives her chilling descriptions of torture, abuse and dishonesty with full force. One might think that she sounds like a marxist or a communist but in reality she is writing her experience of her presense in the camps and amongst the real players. This book was banned in Iran during Nixon's visit in 1973 with the Shah of Iran. And because of it, every bookstore that sold it had to take down their copy and sell it under the table. After Nixon left, the books were back on the shelf and selling like hot cake!!
It is brilliantly written (even the English translation is as provacative as the one I read in Persian) and gives your emotions a great deal of swinging. God Bless Fallaci's ethiest soul!

Nero and the Christians

The Christian v. lion's story has been around so long that it has pretty much become a kind of myth. It is a phrase one brings up in order to illustrate some point or other, but is hardly ever thought about in historical terms. In fact, Christianity itself sometimes seems as if it is becoming a kind of myth. The left doesn't take it seriously, and bashes Christians for being intolerant and condescending. But Christians, in their haste to retaliate, often act intolerant and can be arrogantly condescending. The sense of what it means to be Christian seems to get lost in all of this.

Quo Vadis takes us back to the days when Christianity was fresh and new and shows us just what kind of world it was then that caused such a movement to flourish. This alone would make it an excellent novel, but it works wonderfully on all levels. The characters are superbly drawn, the setting is realistic, the plot crackles along, and, perhaps most importantly in a novel with this subject matter, it never becomes preachy or didactic, instead maintaining an objective perspective throughout.

Rome was the greatest of the ancient empires, yet despite all of its glorious achievements, it was truly a barbaric place. The concept of human rights was non-existent. Slaves--of all races--were property, and could be used in any way one saw fit, including the most vicious or depraved. The rule of law, while discussed in philosophical terms, was only sporadically and occasionally applied. The law instead came and went at the whim of the powerful, and if the powerful happened to be someone like Nero--the ruler of Rome during the course of this novel--then the law was sadistic, cruel, wicked and unpredictable.

We see the effect that living this kind of society has on the two main characters of the novel, both of whom are members of the upper crust: Petronius, a courtier; and Vinicius, a military officer. Petronius, as Nero's confidant, can never let his guard down. He must flatter, cajole, deceive and manipulate Nero every minute of the day, for his very life depends on it. It is a life, "drained and listless and detached," as we are told in the first sentence of the novel. Vinicius falls in love with a captive Christian female, and through his love we see how Christianity changes his life. But it is an unbelievably difficult and dangerous undertaking--with the demented presence of Nero and his sycophants looming over everything--to form an attachment with a person and then a cause such as this.

It gradually dawns on us how the Christian movement began in the first place, and why attempts were made so mercilessly to stamp it out. Instead of dishonesty and cruelty, it called for honesty and kindness. Instead of privilege for the elite, its promises were made to all. Instead of arrogance, it preached submissiveness. Perhaps most importantly, it simplified one's life, and allowed one to live without fear.

Rome is burned, possibly at Nero's orders, incredibly, so that he can experience suffering as he believes a true artist must. To divert the anger of the Romans, he blames Christians. Thousands of men, women, and children are rounded up, put in dungeons for months, then on successive festival days were crucified, burned alive, mauled by gladiators, and, as we know, attacked by wild animals. Their fate is so hideous that in time even the jaded Romans became sickened by it.

These historical events, and the actions of the characters during them, are what make up the bulk of the novel. To say the least, it makes for very compelling reading; indeed, some parts are difficult to bear. And as mentioned, it is presented in a very objective way. Not all of the Christians are presented sympathetically--one, in fact, is a fiery, all-will-be-damned type--and not all the Romans are presented harshly. The noblest character in the novel may very well be Petronius, who uses his influence as much as he can to alleviate the suffering he sees around him. And although he recognizes to some degree the power and decency of the movement, he himself does not wish to become a Christian. He can not abide the idea of being required to love his fellow man, most of whom--the unwashed, ignorant mob--he detests. He is a magnificent creation.

The book is a real eye-opener, a good reminder of what the world was like before the birth of Christ, and a sobering reflection on what being a Christian truly means. At the same time it is also a superbly researched and entertaining piece of historical fiction, and the kind of thing for which historical fiction buffs are constantly on the alert. Great stuff.

Best Work from Nobel Prize Winning Author

Shame that this Nobel Prize winning author isn't better known in the English speaking world. Sienkiewicz won the Nobel Prize for his epic writing, Quo Vadis being his best know work. This is a magnificent novel. I love its strong plot, heroism, and visualization of the Roman period. Truly one of the classics of literature. No need to take my word for it, just consider the Nobel Prize committee's enthusiasm.

Kindle 2 formatting is good. No Table of Contents or jogability.

A magnificent work of art

"Quo Vadis" is the kind of novel one simply must include on his shelf. For those who don't believe me, it won the Nobel Prize--and actually deserved it. In my experience, lots of books, although unworthy of receiving even a single positive review, have gotten awards. But the main reason you should read this splendid novel is because of its wonderful storytelling, compelling plot, beautiful imagery, and great characters. To boot, it wasn't very difficult to comprehend, even though it was written more than a century ago. Despite the fact that I cannot understand a shred of Polish, I know that Kuniczak's translation is an absolutely superb one, and that both he and Sienkiewicz are first-rate novelists.

What I particularly loved about "Quo Vadis" was Sienkiewicz's wonderful attention to detail and imagery. His writing style was so lyrical, poetic, and sense-evocative, I could clearly visualize what he was describing, and for the first time ever, I felt like I was actually *seeing* everything: the wild, drunken orgies of Nero's debauched reign, the city of Rome burning, the coliseum packed with rowdy citizens and sweaty gladiators. People enjoy reading books that provide a vivid visual picture of the setting; I know I do. It is also very evident that Sienkiewicz did his homework and researched extensively for this historical novel.

The characters are what drive the plot--and they certainly do that in "Quo Vadis." I found myself liking a few characters and hating several others. And it is interesting, because when I realized that this novel was about Christians in Rome during Nero's time, I had expected Sienkiewicz to have portrayed each Christian as a kindly saint and all the Romans as decadent louts. I was surprised that not every single Roman was depicted as wicked--the honorable Aulus and his gentle wife Pomponia, for example. And not every Christian was a saint in this book, with Crispus, a fervent follower of Christ, seeming to me somewhat intolerant and very narrow-minded at times. Of course, there are some characters who are pure evil; Poppaea, the golden-haired, manipulative wife of Nero, is "evil incarnate," as Sienkiewicz describes in his novel, and (in my opinion) it is difficult for anyone to like Nero.

The core of the plot is a love story between Vinicius, a young Roman tribune, and Ligia, the beautiful Christian girl with whom he falls deeply in love. Vinicius loves Ligia so much--not merely for her beauty, but her virtue and purity--that he actually converts to Christianity, and we see a prodigious transformation in him, from a decadent, pleasure-soaked Roman courtier to a caring and benevolent Christian. Petronius, Vinicius's uncle and another main character, is painted magnificently as well. Although Petronius does not become a Christian like Vinicius, he seems the sublimest character in the novel; he does whatever he can to lessen others' suffering (especially his nephew's) yet still, he cannot bring himself to love everyone--which is exactly what the Christian faith preaches. Petronius is a worldly Roman noble with an eye for beauty and good taste, and he is also the emperor's confidant, called the "arbiter of elegance" at Nero's court. Despite the impact Christianity has upon his life, he cannot love the dirty, recalcitrant mob for which he has such contempt.

"Quo Vadis" has everything you would want in a great novel: a stellar plot, sublime characters, lively dialogue, and graceful prose. It is a truly laudable novel of epic proportions--something to stay on my shelf beside the classics.

It's a good book for a Psychology intro class. Multiple chapters that go into details about Cognitive thinking, Child Development, Adult Behaviors, Perception and much much more. I only got this book because my Psych instructor is using this book, but if you want to learn psychology on your own then this is a good text book to do it with, there is a test at the end of each chapter, and the answers are provided on the back of the book... awesome for self study. Highly recommend for school / personal use. (beautiful hardback by the way, stunning.)

Book was in great condition but it didnt have the access code or cd. Hopefully my teacher doesnt have us do anything with those and the book is all I need for class, lol
