Lindsay Gibb is a librarian and journalist with a specific interest in zines, film, and comics. Nicolas Cage is a genius. This book will prove it to you.

In 'National Treasure: Nicolas Cage,' Lindsay Gibb makes the argument that Nicolas Cage is an actor of genius who has made deliberate choices to pursue his art.

Nicolas Cage and his acting roles can inspire great debates among film fans. Some are fans of certain films he has made, and some of others. With a wildly diverse range of roles and characters that act out of the normal range, people can be put off by the way Nicolas Cage portrays them. He's been a leading man, and deliberately picked supporting parts. He has played Elvis and cops and lowlifes and drunks. Just when you think you know what he's going to do next, he jumps to another form, or stays with what he's been doing. His acting style has ranged from realism to Western Kabuki.

As a fan of Nicolas Cage, I have sometimes found myself defending that, but Lindsay Gibb is a true fan. Her arguments are backed up with quotes and notes. She even held a Nicolas Cage film festival to help research for this book.

I love the Pop Classics series by ECW Press and this is another in a series that has talked about Elvis Costello, Showgirls, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They are fun, short books to read and I've enjoyed the few I've gotten to review.

Thoughtful, Well-Researched, Entertaining Cage Analysis!

I wish I could give a book more than five stars. This book is, essentially, a more thoughtful and well-researched version of #CageClub. I'm not really the target demographic here; I already know Cage is great, and one of our best actors. But this made me think in ways I hadn't already -- and I've spent A LOT of time thinking about Cage -- and introduced me to many, many great quotes and analysis I haven't seen yet. Great work, Lindsay Gibb!

Great Read (for a school text book)

I guess the title says it all 'Great Read (for a school text book)'

This was a book that was required for a class I took. I read it from cover to cover. I have to say - each chapter was well written and interesting. Each chapter addressed a different natural resource (for example air, freshwater, etc) including many I never considered (like top soil).

There is a newer edition out there. I contacted the publisher about an update. In hindsite I cannot believe that I, a simple minded student, would ask a publisher for an update! I guess that's just a testament to how interesting the book was, I was thinking perhaps maybe a pdf containing the 2 new chapters. The response I got was NO!

Now that the stink eye has been focused on the publisher, there was one point in the book that was a bit annoying. I did not like how the text kept refering to a picture or figure or graphic that almost always was on the next or the previous page turn. I guess that's the challange of the publisher and will always be a problem with the published medium.

OK ... so maybe I dont particularly care for the publishers, but it wont stop me from buying another book from them and this is still a great book.

I keep this book handy, but I rarely need to find anything in it. Marx had a lot of great ideas, and scholars have tried to put limits on his most important doctrines. But this book, with many short sections split into 8 parts by grand topic headings and also by year, gives us: Young Marx 1841-1843, Alienation 1844, Critique of the Philosophical Tradition (Hegel, Feuerbach) 1844-1846, The Materialist Conception of History 1845-1877, The Politics of Revolution 1844-1875, The Theoretical Analysis of Capitalism 1857-1883, Imperialism 1853-1882, and The Democratic Road to Socialism 1850-1880. The final section 57. Against "Personality Cults" is one of the shortest. Part of belonging to a secret society was the condition of Engels and Marx demanding "that everything tending to a superstitious belief in authority was to be removed from the statutes." (p. 502, from Marx to W. Blos, November 10, 1877). Read it and weep.

The Jewish Publication Society gives it a more Jewish reading of the scripture in the context as the Monotheistic Hebrews than the Christian trinitarian understanding of the God head. The use of Hebrew terms within the text also gives it clarity. I recommend it to anyone who would like to understand what the scriptures really say rather than simply the Christian understanding.

About the Author
Thomas Hauser is the author of thirty-nine books. His first work, Missing, was made into an Academy Award–winning film. He later authored Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times, the definitive biography of the most famous fighter ever. In 2004, the Boxing Writers Association of America honored Hauser with the Nat Fleischer Award for Career Excellence in Boxing Journalism.

Rounding Up

Opening another year of boxing as recapped by Thomas Hauser is like getting a Christmas present. To pay him the highest possible compliment, he is our generations fistic answer to A.J. Liebling.

That being said, the paucity of writing about the actual fights from 2009 (the year in boxing this book covers)speaks volumes of the nadir that boxing has reached. There were simply no decent big fights to write about this year. The two real "event" fights, both involving Manny Pacquiao were not really competitive.

But one doesn't really need to pick up a Thomas Hauser year in review book just to read about the fights of the year. Hauser leads off with a tribute to the fighting life of Sugar Ray Robinson. He compares his influence in boxing to that of Babe Ruth's in baseball. The superlative standard bearer. The tragedy of his legacy is that no footage exists of his greatest fights in the 1940's, when he was at the height of his greatness. The sadness of his decline is talked of, and also his arrogance and the ugly side of his personality are openly discussed.

One interesting aside is the story of the great H. J. Heinz, the brilliant sportswriter who was commissioned to ghost write Robinson's biography in the early 1970's. Heinz asked Sugar Ray about his AWOL episode during World War II. He got what he felt was an evasive answer, and feeling he could not objectively paint a true picture of the greatest boxer of all-time, declined to continue. It is hard to imagine many journalists in this day and age making similar choices.

Another interesting entry is the journal of Dave Wolf, who was Joe Frazier's confidant. Wolf chronicles Frazier thoughts and feelings toward his nemesis, Muhammad Ali, who caused Frazier deep pain both in and out of the ring. Frazier was one of the bravest warriors ever to lace on the gloves. Give Hauser credit, he is very close to Ali, yet he alowed these passages to see print in his book. For the Ali fan, it shows another side to the man, and is painful to read.

There are the chapters on some very interesting characters around the fight game, who do not participate in the ring, and also a chapter dicussing books that made their way into print about boxing.

I have read four of these year in review books by Hauser, and I anticipate the count moving higher.

If you love boxing you have to have it

There is no bull chit in Thomas's book...
He tell it all like it is and backs down only when he knows the people he is being confronted by are liers and thieves, He refuses totake the easy road and takes you into the bowles of Boxing and it's dirty and alway refreshing sides.
A wonderful anagoly of a very intriguing and fearless man

It is a cool great detailed read that takes you in the ring and I men Ouch he pulls no punches

Thomas Hauser is the most legitimate and knowledgeable authority on boxing alive today.

If you want to know the inside story on the sport of boxing
and all the characters and players inside that interesting
world, then Thomas Hauser is the best guide. He has
close access to all the significant players while he also
follows and reports insightfully on people you have never
heard of who deserve to have their stories told and who
add dimension and color to the sweet science universe.
