This scathing indictment of U.S. Central American policy by an American novelist and a Panamanian journalist chronicles 21 years of misrule from the advent of Omar Torrijos to the fall of Manuel Noriega. In describing the power struggle following Torrijos's death in 1981, Koster and Sanchez charge that the Reagan administration helped Noriega, its "protege and accomplice," steal the '84 election, and they scoff at George Bush's claim to have been unaware of Noriega's involvement in drug traffic. The book deals primarily with the crimes and cruelties of Torrijos ("a tyrant, murderer, and thief") and Noriega ("an entirely untrustworthy, totally amoral, sadomasochistic sociopath"), and reveals how the U.S. "midwifed" the Panamanian dictatorship into existence in '68, supported it materially and morally in its various permutations, then cut out the very cancer it had created in last year's military intervention. A credible, informative report, it is, however, studded with angry charges not supported with documentation, for example, that Bush, when vice-president, shared a metaphorical bed with the dopers.

Researched and written several years before the downfall of Manuel Noriega, this book is a powerful indictment of U.S. policy in Panama. The authors (Koster is an American novelist and Borbon is an exiled Panamanian journalist) concentrate on the conflict between "visible" U.S. government policies and the "invisible" arrangements set in place by the CIA. The most effective sections of the book are the inside accounts of the abuses of power by Omar Torrijos and the brutality of Noriega's regime. Koster was an eyewitness to the U.S. invasion of Panama in December 1989, and he contributes an appropriate concluding chapter to the saga. Panama's descent into tyranny does not make for easy reading, but this is an extremely important book for any serious student of American foreign policy. Some of the authors' specific claims may be conjecture, yet the overall effect of the book is chilling and thought-provoking. For academic and public libraries.

Essencial History of Panama and the dynamics of a dictatorship

I am biased towards this book. My father wrote it and I lived through some the events or observed while living abroad. This is required reading to understand American foreign policy in Latin America, Panama today, and the dynamics of military governments. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

The Tyrants, the USA and Panama

I found a copy of the Time for Tyrants in Panama in 1999, and read it in total fascination. I had my own background having visited the country periodically since the period of Torrijos in the 70s, and was a frequent visitor in the period 1986 to 1989, while my firm was trying to complete a contract there.
The book provides a no holds barred detailed account of how the systematic corruption developed under Torrijos and how the torch or key to the cash box was passed to Norriega.
The book records the initial visits by Torrijos to Sweden in the 70s related to major power projects which started the cash flowing, and thereby established the rewards for those that controlled the government. Torrijos and then Norriega set up and maintained the system of total control by non elected individuals.
An important element of this book by Koster and Sanchez is their description of how the US government supported the various tyrants as part of their Canal policy throughout this period until the last year of so of Norriega's reign.
During the last two years of Norriega up to the American invasion the book details the murder, torture, kidnapping and destruction of democracy that were directly orchestrated by Norriega, and the failure of the half hearted attempts by the US government to control or remove him.
As the book recounts, the last two terrible years of Norriega were not necessary. The US government could have dealt with the problem earlier, and avoided the misery that fell on Panama.
During my visits through 1988-1989 I was witness to the abuse of Norriega's "dobermans", and the resistance, especially from the white collar segment of the population. Panama was a seriously dangerous place for everyone at that time.
Koster and Sanchez also imply that there is a culture in Panama that made this saga posible. That Martin Torrijos (son of Omar) could be a credible and nearly successful candidate for President in the 1999 elections illustrates this message only too well.

All of Panama's history except for...........

This book is certainly one of the most comprehensive on Panamanian history. Within its pages are a treasure trove of historical information on Panama's past history and the author put forth an great amount of effort in his reasearching of available information for this book.
Mr. Koster left out a very important event, perhaps by accident, seeing as he was unaware, that in 1979, Panama was invaded by an armed force of Americans, who had planned to overthrow the late General Omar Torrijos and assassinate his military intelligence chief (Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Noriega).
I should know, I was one of those involved in this effort and I have written a book ("Panama-Echoes From A Revolution"), which tells all about this long forgotten piece of Panamanian history.
My book certainly adds this historically important part to Mr.Koster's great work.

Complex and involving

The Wind Chill Factor isn't necessarily an easy book to read. The plot is complex and if you don't keep up with the different twists, it would be easy to get lost in the details. However, this is absolutely one of the most richly written books I've ever read. The sensations the lead character experience become the reader's sensations; his thoughts, your thoughts. Once you commit your energy to the story, you'll be hard pressed to put the book down until you are finished.

Dont Cry for me Minnesota

1972: Drat! We have Nixon AND resurgent Nazi sleeper cells here and around the globe? John Cooper is recently divorced and eking out an AA-assisted writer's existence in Cambridge, MA when he receives a cryptic telegram from his elder brother, who is inexplicably in Buenos Aires:
"URGENT YOU MEET ME COOPER'S FALLS 20 JANUARY. DROP EVERYTHING. FAMILY TREE NEEDS ATTENTION. CHEERS OLD BOY. CYRIL."
So home to the family namesake Cooper's Falls, Mn goes John Cooper. This Ludlum-esque page-turner had me as soon as John Cooper's Lincoln swung northward in Chicago and headed on the long ago familiar Illinois Tollroad trip towards home in Minnesota - with a stop at "one of the Fred Harvey emporiums." Almost run off the road near Madison in a blizzard, John goes home to revisit old family secrets. Then round and round the globe he goes, where it stops only author Thomas Gifford knows. I was up all night following the intrigue!

Electrifying story of a complex family

I am amazed and shocked at the vitriol and venom expressed against Gifford in some of these reviews! It's a sign that Gifford is a challenging writer.

It also surprised me, in 1972, that this book was never made into a movie. "Soon to be a major motion picture" said the cover. It never happened.

To the naysaying and nitpicking reviewers, I say, "Grow up." Gifford has captured something ugly and important here in this book. I used to audit county courts and county governments. Later I worked for a chief financial officer who lied under oath to a congressional committee and was fired by the organization's board. I've seen a lot of ruthless, petty, dishonest people.

And this book is a masterpiece in collecting such personalities. It ranks with Robert Towne's immortal screenplay for "Chinatown." And it is almost a screenplay itself. The main character is a literate but down-on-his-luck divorced movie buff, John Cooper, who makes innumerable references to classic motion pictures. He becomes a friend of the local police chief, a boy wonder who got away from the big city force by marrying a rich woman, like Dashell Hammit's Nick Charles.

The tale boomerangs through three continents. These things happen. There are villians like this out there.

If you like this book, you will also like the sequel, "The First Sacrifice" and a triumphant nail-biter about counterfeiting, "The Man from Lisbon," which I think is Gifford's best book ever.

I really liked this novella. Paige and Carter were both very likable characters and Carter made a great Dom. The sex scenes were well written and the book had a great plot and flow. Even though the story was short, I didn't feel that the relationship between Paige and Carter was rushed or pushed. I have read several books that had BDSM aspects; some do it right, some fail miserably. Christine d'Abo did a great job explaining the Dom/Sub relationship and that pain for pleasure is far different than abuse. Sometimes people don't see that.

I look forward to, Pulled Long, Ian's story. It'll be nice to see if things work out for him and Blue Eyes. I've been rooting for them since the first book.

Didn't flip my switch like I was expecting

Review:

Dearest Paige is the eldest Long sibling and, as such, is a mother hen to her sister and brother--constantly worrying and meddling in their lives. She's an independent, take-charge kind of gal. All business. And also totally unsatisfied. Because even though she is demanding in her professional life, she wants nothing more than to surrender in her personal one. Unfortunately, Paige has been hurt and damaged by her last Dom, so she's been neglecting her needs and wants.

That is, until quiet and determined Carter enters life. A firefighter during the day, a Dom when off the clock, the man knows what Paige needs and isn't afraid to give it to her. Even if he has to wear down all her defenses to do it.

I am a huge fan of BDSM in my erotica novels, but for some reason it didn't flip my switch in this one like I was expecting. I can't even give a reason why. It just... didn't. Don't get me wrong, I admired Paige as a woman and was instantly smitten with Carter. And they were perfect together and I enjoyed there story. It just didn't boil my blood like I was hoping for.

A wonderful addition to the Long Shots series

A Shot in the Dark, Christine d'Abo's second installment in the Long Shot series, is an intense journey into the world of BDSM. Following her escape from an abusive D/s relationship, Paige Long has dedicated herself to the family owned coffee shop. Her meeting with dominant Carter West sparks her desire to once again explore her submissive side.

The oldest of the Long siblings, Paige's submission in the bedroom is a sharp contrast to the control she exhibits in other areas of her life. Her first submissive relationship crossed that fine line that exists between pain for pleasure and abuse. Three years later Paige has a better understanding of her sexual desires, and her chance encounter with Carter brings her the submission she craves and incredibly satisfying sex.

Carter is definitely an alpha male, but his need to dominate Paige is underscored by respect and caring. He puts Paige's satisfaction and needs ahead of his own wants and desires. He is also incredibly protective of her when she is confronted by her past.

The same strong family connection from Double Shot is also present in A Shot in the Dark. Ian's advice and support plays a strong role in Paige coming to terms with both her past and present relationships. Intriguing glimpses of Josh, the owner of Mavericks, keeps me hoping Ms. d'Abo will someday tell us his story.

A Shot in the Dark is a highly sensual read and provides readers with valuable insight into the BDSM lifestyle. I enjoyed getting to know Paige and Carter, and I am impatiently awaiting Ian's story Pulled Long which will be available December 12.

If you are looking for a series that is fresh, unique and incredibly sexy, then you should give the Long Shot series a try.

About the Author

Shirley Trevena is a successful watercolour artist, internationally renowned for her paintings of still life, flowers and landscape imagery. She is a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and has won several watercolour awards – the Winsor & Newton Award and the Llewellyn Prize. Shirley regularly runs painting workshops and exhibits her work annually at the Mall Galleries, London, and The Orange Steet Gallery, Rutland.

New inspiration

Although the title of the book refers to watercolour painting only, artists using other mediums will get inspiration as well.

Shirley Travena dives into the medium with enthusiasm (no tepid, sepia palette here!) incorporating watercolour with mixed media (including of all things, oil pastels and collage) using imagination, flair and ingenuity. The illustrations are vibrant; a feast for the eyes. While tonal values, composition, alignment and other basics are covered, they are presented in an innovative way. No boring lectures here.

The author shows a delightful candour - admitting how hesitant she was when first starting - and even daring to show some of her early works, on which she has since improved. But then she provides creative ways of overcoming problems, including the initial, daunting feeling of confronting a blank piece of paper or canvas. In addition to trouble-shooting, there are numerous ideas for achieving great effects with very simple techniques. Her use of masking tape to create different planes, for example, is very creative.

This is an experienced artist who nevertheless insists there is no 'right' way to create pictures, which is borne out by such headings as "Daring combinations" and "If a picture needs something, feel free to invent it." Whatever medium or style you use, doing some of the experiments and explorations in this book could well give a new lease of life to your paintings, as well as provide inspiration for new works of art.

Uncommonly Brilliantly Fabulous "MUST HAVE"

An internet search of images turned up several VERY intriguing still-lifes full of bright color swatches, lacy textures, and over-lapping objects in a style like absolutely no other artist on earth. Dang! Who's work IS this? Hmmmm! Shirley Trevena. Dig deeper and a plethora of utterly brilliant images, each one as exciting as the last - and I'm thinking, "I have GOT to learn more about this woman! Bought both of her books AND her DVD, and if she ever puts out anything else, I'll get that, too. Most artists are creative, but in usually in a rather traditional, safe sense. Not Trevena. Her work reflects both her knowledge of color and how it's supposed to work, of composition, shapes, lines --- all the elements of the accomplished artist, and then she breaks all the rules and STILL makes it work! Perhaps she has some intuitive, mystical sense about color choice, about playing pale colors against daring and dark hues, and expecially about composition. I don't know. But, if I could collect only one artist's work, I would fill my house with Trevena's. Taking risks, being outside-of-the-box creative is exactly what she has done - inspiring you to do the same. I have well over 100 art books now. Hers are my absolute favorites - the ones from which I've learned the most about taking risks, and feeling giddy with excitement when I'm able to take risks with my own paintings.

great inspiration

I love this book and have read it from cover to cover. Shirley Trevena's paintings are thrilling to look at, the text is very readible and the layout keeps you turning the pages. I have been painting watercolours of flowers and still life for many years but Shirley Trevena shows me new ways to forge ahead, and fun ways to overcome some of the obstacles I have been facing in my work. Congratulations also to Albert Jackson and the other photographers for a truly excellent book. I look forward to the other book by Trevena.
