HCISPP: This book is all you need to pass!

I took and past my HCISPP (ISC2) certification. I used several books, but this one is far and about the best. It was complete, interesting and motivating. Sean Murphy know what he's talking about.

Excellent - this book covers all the bases!

An excellent book. I really enjoyed the way the material is developed. Unlike many books of this nature - where I find there is a lot of fluff - I thought that this book was dense with information and every page had relevant and interesting points. My copy has lots of underlining now, as well as tabs marking important areas that I will re-read. It's a great reference, very thoroughly researched.

Highly recommended book for preparing for the HCISPP®

Excellent book and great study material for the (ISC)² HCISPP® - HealthCare Information Security and Privacy Practitioner exam. I only had 8 days to study for the test, and three days were spent taking the (ISC)² classroom training, which left only 5 for self-study. I ordered Sean's book a week ago, got it last Friday, and read it cover-to-cover over the weekend. It's a great supplement to the HCISPP® CBK. The book covered a lot of ground in a readily digestible format, in some ways it was better than the CBK. At a minimum I recommend reading them in tandem. In summary, I highly recommend this book, particularly if you're planning on taking the HCISPP®. And yes, I passed the exam last night. Thank you Sean!!!

Don't let that bilious fuchsia-and-yellow cover get your hopes up, fanboys - we're in academe! Cobbled together from discrete articles* by a humanities prof who's himself also a long-time comics fanboy or, as he would no doubt put it, collector, this reads like a textbook - that is, uninspired - and all the unfair and unsubstantiated snark directed at earlier surveys of the field (see Further Reading section) won't make this rose smell any sweeter. Pics are tired, text half-hearted - almost any book about comics you care to pick up will yield more pleasure and illumination, more PASSION, even the very old Penguin Book of Comics and Couperie & Horn's History of the Comic Strip, both of which have the added interest of including Europe. It is SO not just an 'American art form', guys! Though the not-so-egregious professor wheels out that hoary and tendentious claim once again..

* Charlie Chaplin and the Comics? Meh. Faulkner Reads the Funny Papers is about the best - mostly this is just bog-standard history, as we say in the UK (possible meaning: to be consigned to the bathroom?)

About the Author
Darl Kuhn is a senior database administrator working for Oracle. He handles all facets of database administration from design and development to production support. He also teaches advanced database courses at Regis University in Colorado. Darl does volunteer DBA work for the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group. He has a graduate degree from Colorado State University and lives near Spanish Peaks, Colorado, with his wife, Heidi, and daughters, Brandi and Lisa.

Normally I don't like books that are essentially recapitulation of manuals but this was well done.

This book is mostly a restatement of the Oracle manuals. But it excels over other books of the same nature in two ways:

1. the authors do from time to time offer some of their own experiences. This has become one of the reasons I continue to buy technical books: I am looking for the author's experiences, not basics I can read from Oracle. So they offer a little in places where it makes a difference.

2. this is a one stop shop for everything index related in Oracle. Details about indexes and indexing in Oracle are all over the Oracle manual set. This book covers most of it up through 11g. This means it can save you a great deal of time because it coalesces index related material under one cover. For that it gets much higher marks than it would have otherwise gotten from me. Again it is this book's ability to save you hours of research time by putting everything index related in one place that really makes this book a good device.

I recommend it to beginner and intermediate skill levels. Nothing hard to read here, good summaries all over. But if you have been doing Oracle for 10 years or more, and are up-to-date with 11g then you won't find too much here so not a five star item.

No explosive revelations for the DBA with graying ponytail and sandals but it covers the topic well. For the newcomer or as a review (I found it helpful), it is a good book.

Darl Kuhn is one of the best teachers when it comes to database back up and recovery; he knows what he is talking about. I had him as a teacher at Regis University and we used the Expert Indexing in Oracle. This book is well-explained in every step of the backup and pitfalls that you should be aware of; it also has extra information on most of the databases. I kept the book as a reference desk.

Grade 6–10—In this sequel to Powder Monkey (2005) and Prison Ship (2006, both Bloomsbury), Sam and his friend Richard have a rocky voyage from Australia back to England on a merchant ship. Meanwhile England is at war with France, and the British navy is sending out press gangs to "recruit" sailors. When Sam is in London, he barely escapes a gang and decides to accept Viscount Neville's offer to purchase him a post in the navy as an officer. He is on the same ship as Admiral Lord Nelson and fights with him in the legendary Battle of Trafalgar. Sam's sailing story starts slowly, taking several chapters for the wind to come into the plot sails. Even then, it feels more like a choppy travelogue than an adventure story. One can only wish that Sam mused less about what he should and should not do. Dowswell, however, does give a wealth of historical detail about 19th-century sailing without detracting too much from the plot. The author is at his best describing the Battle of Trafalgar and the funeral of Admiral Lord Nelson, which he based on eyewitness accounts. Young seafarer Sam stood next to Horatio Nelson at the battle of Copenhagen in Powder Monkey (2005), was court-martialed and transported to Australia in Prison Ship (2006), and here comes full circle—returning to England with a pardon to stand near Nelson at Trafalgar, and later to march in Nelson’s funeral. Dowswell surrounds his intrepid narrator with scurvy knaves and loyal friends, tucks in generous measures of well-researched nautical detail, and when battle finally comes, doesn’t stint on the gore. He’s still a little slow getting to the action scenes, but fans of the Hornblower saga or the likes of Michael Molloy’s Peter Raven under Fire (2005) will sail along, happy to see Sam’s fortunes, in love and in war, on the rise. A historical afterword and schematic drawings of HMS Victory and the climactic line of battle are worthwhile additions. Grades 5-8. --John Peters

Paul Dowswell has obviously spent much time in research for this series. Not only was his skill in writing quickly evident, but he also showed even more skill in responsibly giving glimpses of the inhumanity of the era to young and impressionable readers. I enjoyed reading this series with my son and the time we spent talking about the moral issues raised by this series. I strongly suggest to make this series a parentally guided experience.
