but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls
By Amazon Customer
It has been four years and a thousand books since I’ve read it, but I loved delving back into the world of Gallagher Girls; in fact, now I feel like I appreciate the nuances of the book more. Back when I had read it, I considered it as a light-hearted fun novel about teenage spies and the trouble they get into, but now I see how varied the theme of the book was. Sure, it starts out as fun – Cammie and her friends, Bex and Liz, are now sophomores at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Women, a school for geniuses training in espionage, and now they get to do Covert Ops. There is a new girl in school – Macey McHenry, whom they do not know yet but is soon going to be their best friend. And on their first mission out in town, Cammie gets her first taste of normal life in Josh, a cute regular guy who notices her, despite her being very good at going unnoticed. What begins as a side project to find if he is shady soon develops into a struggle in Cammie’s heart.

While the tone of the novel is mostly jovial and the fact that the protagonist is a little boy-crazy on getting her first boyfriend, the book goes further into why Cammie is attracted to Josh. He presents a normality she has never experienced being a part of Gallagher Academy; she decisively gets to choose between her life and this picket-fence picture. All her life, she has been known as the daughter of a missing (possibly dead) agent, and here out in the real world, nobody knows that. She gets lost in her legend for a bit, but soon hard decisions have to be made, and she commits to her life as a covert operative.

Most importantly, even with the seriousness of the life as a spy and the danger it comes with, Carter infuses joy and simplicity by bringing it in a group of genius girls who have way too many skills, and a lot of love for each other. It is cute, certainly, but also slightly grim. Overall, the book is brilliant and the extra epilogue was a treat.

Prep school princess or kick-butt spy?
By S Richardson
I'm a middle school librarian and bought this to replace an often checked-out, worn-out and probably eventually lost copy of the book my school had. The kids love this book! It's about Cammie, who is a student at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, a scool that is supposed to be for geniuses but is actually a school for spies. Cammie loses it when she meets an ordinary, cute boy, even though she knows how to kill a man seven different ways and speaks 14 languages. This book is sort of "Princess Diaries" cute like that; you really like Cammie and (kid or grown up) you are cheering for her to catch the bad guys and catch the boy, too.

The first book in an absolutely amazing series! This series is by far my favorite books in the world! If you thought this book was a little frivolous, be assured that the series gets intense and less "teen" specific. Give it a go and if you wish it was more intense, keep going into the next book and it'll get there I promise!

Conquering Shame and Codependency: 8 Steps to Freeing the True You, by Darlene Lancer

A nationally recognized author and codependency expert examines the roots of shame and its connection with codependent relationships. Learn how to heal from their destructive hold by implementing eight steps that will empower the real you, and lead to healthier relationships.

Shame: the torment you feel when you’re exposed, humiliated, or rejected; the feeling of not being good enough. It’s a deeply painful and universal emotion, yet is not frequently discussed. For some, shame lurks in the unconscious, undermining self-esteem, destroying confidence, and leading to codependency. These codependent relationships--where we overlook our own needs and desires as we try to care for, protect, or please another--often cover up abuse, addiction, or other harmful behaviors. Shame and codependency feed off one another, making us feel stuck, never able to let go, move on, and become the true self we were meant to be.

In Conquering Shame and Codependency, Darlene Lancer sheds new light on shame: how codependents’ feelings and beliefs about shame affect their identity, their behavior, and how shame can corrode relationships, destroying trust and love. She then provides eight steps to heal from shame, learn to love yourself, and develop healthy relationships.

Well-Researched and Worth The Read
By Brian P.
Overall, this book is well-researched and has the not-so-obvious insights I enjoy when I invest the time for self-improvement. I would recommend this book to those who struggle with codependency issues and are having trouble putting their finger on “why”. Yes, it has to do with your childhood as most counselors will tell you, but this book shows how the “separation of self” actually occurs due to shame. The concepts are easy to digest, and it’s presented in a way that makes it easy to see how this might have happened in your life.

The book opens with a discussion on shame and how it underlies addiction. Shame is a natural part of life, but culture can shape how we use it. For example, in China shame is the beginning of integrity. But in the west, we tend not to share our shame in spite of the fact we sometimes never forget our shameful experiences. Nonetheless, we need to be fortified with coping skills to be resilient to shame. “Becoming independent and self-supporting is a milestone that, if not reached, can trigger a sense of failure for not meeting societal norms for success.”

The book explains that there’s a common confusion between shame and other things, likes shyness or guilt. Guilt, while perceived as negative, can actually be an indicator of something that needs corrected. The difference is that while guilt is awareness that SOMETHING WE DID WAS WRONG, shame is a belief that there’s SOMETHING WRONG WITH US.

We also learn in Chapter 1 that too much shame, or shame about the “wrong” things, sabotages relationships and can lead to anti-social behavior, addiction, and codependency. And when shame becomes chronic, it can take over our identity and our ability to enjoy life, chipping away at the trust we have in the world and ourselves. It’s the feeling of being a bad or unworthy person. Chronic shame no longer needs an external event to be triggered. This is when shame becomes a paralyzing problem.

“Whatever we feel ashamed of, at its foundation is an often unconscious belief of inferiority or unacceptability – of being unlovable.”
Another statement that rang true for me is that we imagine others see and judge us as we judge ourselves. Often we think people are judging us or judging our loved ones when they’re not. It’s reminiscent of Don Miguel Ruiz’ The Four Agreements, the second of which is Don’t Make Assumptions.

In later chapters, the author describes the effect that chronic shame has on the developing self. Essentially, if parts of us are denied, rejected, ignored, or invalidated, or if we go through a traumatic event, we may cope by creating unreal identities (Ideal Self) which we then try to actualize instead of actualizing our True Self.

Our True Self thrives in warmth, nurturing, and affirmation, When we don’t receive these things, our True Self recedes and becomes overshadowed by shame which we internalize over time. “Our ideal self reflects on how we think we should be in order to survive in the family, but instead of protecting our real self, the ideal self further alienates us from who we really are….” “From childhood onward, the Critic expects the unattainable by insisting that we suppress authentic feelings and traits that conflict with our internal ideal. We conform to who it thinks we should be and what it believes we should feel, think, do, and need.”

The interesting correlation the book draws is how this shame and separation of self actually precipitates codependency.
“The codependent self is out of touch with the real self. A codependent is someone who can’t function from his or her innate self, but organizes thinking and behavior around another person(s) success, process, or substance; whether addicted to a person, a process (such as gambling or sex), or a substance (such as food, drugs, or alcohol), they all share symptoms and characteristics. The difference is the object(s) of a person’s dependency. Codependency is a disease of a lost self, depriving us of vitality, spontaneity, and self-fulfillment.”

There’s also discussion about intergenerational codependency; it happens especially when one or both parents were codependent. Neglected parents often become overinvolved, and parents that are controlled become too permissive. As a consequence children develop codependent problem around autonomy, boundaries and / or self-trust.

When we deny shame instead of integrating it, it gets triggered and we become vulnerable to getting entrenched in it. We might act out, withdraw, become aggressive, project, or avoid altogether, but the shame doesn’t go away.

Part of Chapter 3 discuss how we cope with this downward shame-spiral, namely by adopting specific personality types, and for codependents, the pervading personality type is called The Accommodator. Those who are addicted to love, romance, or relationships closely resemble the stereotypical codependent. “Accommodators yearn for happiness and validation with one significant person with whom they can merge to finally achieve wholeness.” They don’t believe they have rights, and feel guilty stating their needs, of which they’re mostly unaware. This denial of self-interest and fear of conflict and abandonment makes setting boundaries extremely difficult for Accommodators, which allows others to easily abuse and exploit them.

This section explains why codependents express their frustration through passive-aggressiveness rather than directness, because they, “are usually reliving the experience of being shamed as a child, enacted by a partner whom they see as their parent. Emotionally trapped in their past, they’re unable to access their power as an adult, further stunting their ability to assert and protect themselves and stop the abuse. Instead, to keep peace, they placate, appease, and communicate indirectly in ways that are dishonest, manipulative, and passive-aggressive. Their aggression is directed at themselves and is expressed indirectly toward others through control, criticism, complaints, and passive manipulation.”

In the process of healing, the codependent must drop his or her external focus, which often results in emptiness, since she was used to getting validation, attention or recognition from the outside. There’s suddenly a void, a void formerly filled by drama, and just as an addict faces the loss of his drug of choice, the codependent faces a lack of meaning.

To move passed this, “The objective is to voluntarily experience the emptiness that occurs by intentionally not trying to escape despair. Abandon hope as well… and allow a humbling powerlessness to occur.” This forces a person to get something from herself and get less from the outside. Once expectations are more aligned with reality, change can happen.

Meditation was mentioned as a healthy exercise to start getting more aligned. I’m always interested to see this technique mentioned as I read books on the topic, as I came to the same conclusion on my own years ago. Of course, if feelings are too intense to process on your own, the author recommends seeking professional help.

As one faces the void of emptiness after giving up external focus, there are a host of common issues they may come upon, such lack of self-trust, feeling unimportant, guilt or anxiety, perfectionism, various forms of controlling, the “tyranny of the shoulds”. With some searching, one finds that these issues are largely due to the Inner Critic. Once one can “examine and release the Critics’s admonishments, their energy returns, their mood lifts, and their real self is free to enjoy the present.”

At the end, the author lays out an 8-step process for recovery. The steps involve increasing self-awareness to connect with the True Self, processing one’s shame, and build self-esteem and self-love.

Again, I found this book full of insight and overall it's a great read!

Lancer's landmark book examines the root of shame and its connection with codependency. It offers tools for healing from shame.
By Terry Gaspard
Darlene Lancer's breakthrough book sheds new light on the complicated topic of shame - an often misunderstood emotion. It offers eight key steps to heal from shame, learn self-love, and begin the journey of developing healthy relationships. While everyone deals with shame, not many people understand it or acknowledge it. Even though we might not share our stories of experiencing shame - we have vivid memories of them and they leave an imprint.
I agree with Lancer that shame is often silent and self-inflicted - yet still has a powerful impact. Many individuals suffer silently and needlessly because they lack self-worth - so don't allow themselves to be vulnerable and trust intimate partners due to fear of rejection. Shame can cause us to stay stuck in unhealthy relationship patterns if we don't heal from it.
I found this book informative because I grew up in a dysfunctional, divorced family and have experienced shame but never understood how it contributed to my codependent tendencies. After all, self-awareness is the first step in the process of change. It will also provide a valuable resource for my clients who have endured the divorce experience and often feel shamed and powerless to move on with their lives. This book is an excellent resource for both mental health providers and the general public.

Conquer Codependency, Conquer Shame, Get on with Your True Self
By Jackie Paulson
Conquering Shame and Codependency: 8 Steps to Freeing the True You by Darlene Lancer talks about:
1. The shame experience
2. Shame and Identity
3. Escaping Shame
4. Emptiness
5. Shame and Symptoms of codependency
6. Love's Silent Killer
7. Sexual Shame
8. 8 Steps to Free Your true self

The Introduction is a true account of how the author attended an Al-Alnon program in 1979, and she did not trust or value herself or even know who she was "outside the roles she played each day." I think this is an experience most women encounter and we need to get off the treadmill of people pleasing and get back in touch with our feelings and stop people pleasing. Yes, steps to get over codependency.
I loved the chart on page 124:
Codependent relationships:
* Intense attraction
* Idealize each other and ignore difference
* Fall in love and make commitments
* Get to know each other
* Become disappointed
* Cling to romantic fantasy of love
* Try to change partner into ideas
* Feel resentful and unloved

That did it for me, because then you learn how to become whole and have healthy relationships. The information in this book was beyond my expectations, and I learned more about shame and how it can stem from childhood onto adulthood. This is my top ten list of favorites for 2014. © 2014 Jackie Paulson

The Wolf chieftan plots to rule the north and controlling his daughter is crucial to his schemes. However, other tribes also prepare for strife. Strangers from the far south appear too, seeking allies in their own conflict. It's a season for omens as priests foresee danger and a darkness falling across the land. Some say a great war is coming, overshadowing even Wolf ambitions. A time of testing and broken laws is near, but what spark will set the world ablaze?

A Great Start to a New Series!
By J. L. Jamieson
Maniye is torn between two tribes--her father is chieftain of the Wolf clan, and her Mother was queen of the Tiger. All humans can shape shift to their clan's animal shape, but most are limited to one shape. People have been known to go mad with more than one soul warring for control.

Maniye has a secret--she can shift to both Tiger and Wolf. If the rest of the Wolf find out, they'd tear her to pieces.

Her Father has always been cold and distant to her, and the tribe's Priest has been outright cruel. After her coming of age, she learns of her Father's plans for her and flees. Now she runs from the killer her Father has sent to retrieve her, and from the choice she must make. The Tiger, or the Wolf?

A blazing new start to an epic series, the story unfolds with the grace of an old tale and the characters have a depth and dimension that speaks to Tchaikovsky's skill as a storyteller. A definite must for your buy list.

Impressive and satisfying, Lots of meat on these bones.
By Arlo
It's rare to read a book where you can find no defect. I invite any of my fellow voracious readers to give this one the test, then tell me if I'm wrong. The setting is new and strange, but familiar enough to travel with the characters. The characters are fully composed and alive, though just as strange with their common magic. That magic is fully realized and part of the story, which drives along at a perfect pace, never getting bogged down in details or skipping on important scenes. Those scenes are dynamic and satisfying, the action never giving the impression that it is just too long since the last fight. In short, where is the next one?

Review

"I selected the Rogers book for my class after carefully reviewing nearly a dozen alternatives. The book strikes a nice balance between breadth and depth, allowing me to add supplemental readings without overwhelming students with too much content. My students find the book engaging and they like the use of case examples at the start of each chapter. I recommend this text to colleagues."

--Paul T. Shattuck, Brown School of Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis

"Anissa Rogers’ Human Behavior in the Social Environment is an accessible and practical theory text. The case studies and practice examples, both in the book and on-line, provide students with meaningful insight into the use of theory in realistic social work practice settings. The text also provides students with regular opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills, including a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of each theory and application questions for students to engage at the end of each chapter."

--Christie Halvor, Social Work, Concordia University

"Bravo for Rogers’ highly readable, comprehensive exploration of human behavior, where lifespan and theory meet practice! Rich cases within the text and interactive website facilitate critical thinking, as students apply and critique assessments and leading edge interventions through the lens of a broad array of traditional and contemporary theoretical perspectives."

--Teri Kennedy, Director, Office of Gerontological Social Work Initiatives, Arizona State University

"Dr. Rogers introduces theory in a matter students understand, and can apply in the field. Students find the case studies invaluable, as they challenge and capture some components of the core competencies, such as, critical thinking, diversity, theoretical frameworks, and assessment. The online resources accompanying the textbook are also excellent tools I have used in the classroom."

--Belinda Bruster, Social Work, Florida Gulf Coast University

Good Reference Book
By Lizzie Gaskins
I like this book. We've been using it for my Human Behavior in Social Environment 2 class. I haven't had to use it much (That's really more because of how my professor teaches the class though) but when I have its been a good teaching and reference tool. I intend to keep my copy and use it for future class projects.

Kindle Ed: Page Numbers are Incorrect
By Amazon Customer
This is not a review on the book itself, but on the kindle version. I borrowed the kindle edition for a class and I've just started reading it. What I noticed already is that the page numbers in the kindle edition does not match the actual book (I compared my kindle edition to the screenshots from Google Books). The pages in the kindle edition start a couple of pages into Chapter 1 when it should be at the very beginning of Chapter 1--I'm not sure if there are any other glitches further into the book or just at the beginning. I realize it's a small detail, but especially for a textbook, it can be really annoying when your instructor and peers are referring to a page and you cannot find the exact location; not to mention, citing this book in a APA style paper is going to be a nightmare.

I'm also looking to send feedback to Amazon, so hopefully it will get fixed soon...

Cockpit Confidential: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel: Questions, Answers, and Reflections, by Patrick Smith

A New York Times bestseller

For millions of people, travel by air is a confounding, uncomfortable, and even fearful experience. Patrick Smith, airline pilot and author of the web's popular Ask the Pilot feature, separates the fact from fallacy and tells you everything you need to know...

•How planes fly, and a revealing look at the men and women who fly them
•Straight talk on turbulence, pilot training, and safety
•The real story on congestion, delays, and the dysfunction of the modern airport
•The myths and misconceptions of cabin air and cockpit automation
•Terrorism in perspective, and a provocative look at security
•Airfares, seating woes, and the pitfalls of airline customer service
•The colors and cultures of the airlines we love to hate

Cockpit Confidential covers not only the nuts and bolts of flying, but also the grand theater of air travel, from airport architecture to inflight service to the excitement of travel abroad. It's a thoughtful, funny, at times deeply personal look into the strange and misunderstood world of commercial flying.

It's the ideal book for frequent flyers, nervous passengers, and global travelers.

Refreshed and vastly expanded from the original Ask the Pilot, with approximately 75 percent new material.

Often Opinionated, Occasionally Pedantic, Always Entertaining
By takingadayoff
Expecting an update of Patrick Smith's earlier book, Ask the Pilot: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel, I was surprised to see a completely different book. Yes, he still answers questions that passengers are curious about, such as how dangerous is turbulence, and what is in the air supply in the cabin, but he goes into many other topics that are of interest to people who enjoy flying. He discusses airline logos and liveries (the paint jobs on the planes) and airline names.

Smith is often pedantic and always opinionated, and it all makes for an entertaining book. He has some definite thoughts about the service on airlines, which is a little surprising, since he is a pilot for a major U.S. airline (but he doesn't say which one), and he also has some comments about passengers, which are usually less strident, such as his puzzlement over why sudoku is so popular. Just don't get him started on airport security.

One important reason Smith's book may appeal to more people than a straightforward question and answer book would, is that Smith is not only an industry professional, but he's often a passenger, traveling for fun, so he knows what it's like to sit in coach. This dual point of view, which is apparently not very common among airline employees, many of whom don't care to travel on their own time or dime, gives Smith more perspective, so he's not just the lecturer here, he knows your travelin' pain.

Not only does he travel, he enjoys airports, flying, and seeing new places. He intersperses his question and answer sections with musings on travel. Most entertaining, in my opinion, were his ramblings on questions of design, such as airline logos and slogans.

Smith is a little too honest to completely allay your fears about flying, but I appreciate the straight talk and it gives him a lot more credibility than if he told you not to worry, he's got it covered up in the cockpit. He does have it covered, but there are no guarantees, and he's weathered a couple of hairy experiences.

Although you might want to save those sections for when you're on terra firma, much of the book would be quite diverting while you're stuck in the middle seat.

For the real airplane lovers...
By Jill Meyer
Are you a nervous flyer? Are you someone who'd rather drive than fly? Are you someone who doesn't get excited looking at the lights of planes as they line up in the night sky outside a busy airport, coming in for a landing, one after the other? On the other hand, do you know what the terms "OAG", "triple 7", and "Runway Two-niner" refer to? If you're the latter and not the former, you'll enjoy Patrick Smith's new book, "Cockpit Confidential".

Patrick Smith - the name "Smith" is a nom-de-plume - is an airline pilot and blogger, who operates out of Boston. He used to blog for SALON magazine but I'm not sure he still writes for them. In any case, he has his own website, askthepilot.com, and this new book. His previous one, "Ask the Pilot: Everything You Need to Know About Flying", was published in 2004. Smith has been been a pilot and in love with all forms of air travel since, as a child living in Boston, he'd sit on the Revere beach and watch in awe as planes landed at nearby Logan Airport. He grew up to make a living as first a pilot for a commuter carrier - flying up and down the Atlantic seaboard and all around New England - and then he "graduated" to flying cargo jets for a freight airline. Finally, he's now flying for an international passenger airline. (I think it might be Delta, from what I've been able to glean from his writing. Or, if not, American.) He has been subjected to layoffs during his career and is quite honest about how he - and other pilots - struggle with the on-going airline politics and economic ups-and-down that make a pilot's career somewhat haphazard.

Okay, Patrick Smith and I are airline fanatics. And, probably so are most people reading this review. Most of us fly a lot - Smith is lucky that he gets paid to do so - and we like to see new places. We're also fascinated by the arcane of the airline industry - old tickets from the 1940's and clips from newsreels of passengers boarding a plane in the 1950's outfitted in suits and ties and hats. We know what local airlines were swallowed up by what larger airlines, and we know airport codes. Patrick Smith is talking to US in his book. We "get" him, and he "gets" us.

His new book talks about his own, long love of flying. He writes about how difficult it is to "catch on" in the airline industry, and how that industry has weathered crashes - both physical and economic - and the changing requirements of the TSA. Smith doesn't like the TSA - who does? - and is not shy in giving some recommendations which might not please the politically-correct among us. Looking at the September 11th terrorist attacks in particular, he talks about how the TSA and other government groups reacted by imposing the wrong "rules" in the hopes of making airplane travel "safer". "Safer" than what? Smith recounts the many terror attacks and hijackings of airplanes and airports in the 1970's and 1980's that we've seem to have forgotten. Is the taking away of a butter knife from the flight bag of pilot Patrick Smith by over-zealous TSA officials going to make the plane and the passengers Smith is going to fly be any "safer"? Hell, no. And what about those stupid restrictions on 4oz of toothpaste and mouthwash? Good lord, it's half the battle of flying today just getting through TSA security.

Author/pilot Patrick Smith covers Sept 11th and many other subjects in his new book. It's not a book most readers will be particularly interested in, but for those of us who read his blog, look-in-awe at his YouTube videos of night-landings at JFK taken from the cockpit, and enjoy flying and the history of flying, this book's for us.

Not a frequent flyer? Buy this book.
By Fast Eddy
If you are a road warrior and aviation aficionado, as I am, you won't learn much that is new from this very easy to read tome. On the other hand, if you don't know much about how the airline industry works or what goes on in the cockpit, you will learn a great deal. The author covers a lot of ground and never gets too technical for the average reader. Well worth the price of the Kindle edition.

Dangerous Sisters of the Hebrew Bible, by Amy Kalmanofsky

Fathers, sons, and mothers take center stage in the Bible's grand narratives, Amy Kalmanofsky observes. Sisters and sisterhood receive less attention in scholarship but, she argues, play an important role in narratives, revealing anxieties related to desire, agency, and solidarity among women playing out (and playing against) their roles in a patrilineal society. Most often, she shows, sisters are destabilizing figures in narratives about family crisis, where property, patrimony, and the resilience of community boundaries are at risk. Kalmanofsky demonstrates that the particular role of sisters had important narrative effects, revealing previously underappreciated dynamics in Israelite society.

Review
"Amy Kalmanofsky rightly contends that 'conventional reading' of biblical narrative tends to 'overlook the Bible's significant sisters.' In Dangerous Sisters of the Hebrew Bible, she rectifies that oversight in a thoughtful and provocative manner. Her work is anchored in sensitive close reading from a refreshingly original point of view, and her focus on text is complemented by judicious appeal to theory, thoughtful engagement with previous scholarship, and sound judgment." Alan Cooper Jewish Theological Seminary "With exegetical finesse and ingenuity, Amy Kalmanofsky explores biblical stories about sisters and sisterhoods, a topic largely overlooked by prior scholars. Dangerous Sisters of the Hebrew Bible offers valuable new insights about these 'destabilizing figures' and the important role they play in family narratives in the Bible. Through her perceptive analysis of nine texts dealing with ideal and dangerous sisters and sisterhoods, Kalmanofsky shows how these stories compare to other narratives about women and brothers, what these texts tell us about the Bible's gender ideology, and how they contribute to the Bible's 'grand narrative.' As a result, the book is an important addition to the field of biblical studies." Andrea L. Weiss Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion "Dangerous Sisters offers fresh insight into the complex roles of sisters and sisterhoods from the biblical narrative that are resonant today where women are still seen as both essential agents and expendable objects. Our contemporary stories mirror the biblical ones as women support and explode existing boundaries in families, communities and societal structures. Though Amy Kalmanofsky approaches her topic with scholarly expertise this compelling book should be read by a broad audience of lay people and religious professionals from many faith traditions." Katharine Henderson Auburn Theological Seminary "Kalmanofsky's balanced, creative readings of biblical stories of sisters and sisterhood shed new light on biblical gender ideology. Her highly readable style makes this an invaluable resource for teaching about the Bible and gender." Karina Hogan Fordham University "Kalmanofsky's careful examination of both sisters and sisterhoods demonstrates how they were again and again critical in advancing grand narrative aims of the Bible and principles of Israelite society. Her groundbreaking work not only enables a fresh reading of the text, but also puts forward alternate understandings of the Israelite family and ultimately the divine-human relationship." Eloquent and persuasive
By Stephanie Oppenheim
In Dangerous Sisters of the Hebrew Bible, Amy Kalmanofsky brings to light the previously overlooked role of sisters and sisterhoods in the Hebrew Bible. She identifies two paradigms of sisters and sisterhoods, the “ideal” and the “dangerous,” and illuminates their vital function in biblical narrative. As she convincingly argues, sisters and sisterhoods are “crucial players in the biblical drama.” Kalmanofsky aptly demonstrates the destabilizing power of these sister figures, as well as the surprising narrative and rhetorical power they wield in the Bible’s master narrative. While most of the sister stories enforce gender expectations and serve patriarchal values, Kalmanofsky makes the powerful case that sisterhood can also provide an alternative family paradigm that is not only ideal but redemptive. Kalmonofsky supports her central argument with close readings of individual Bible stories that are precise, perceptive, and moving. Dangerous Sisters of the Hebrew Bible is an illuminating and elegantly written book. It makes compelling reading not only for biblical scholars but for anyone interested in literary narratives, women’s studies, the history of the family, and Jewish studies.

Recommended in local paper by Reform Rabbi. It was a bit tedious for me to read, but, does explain Bible stories in the Old Testament.
