About the Author
Dr. Cynthia Crosson-Tower is a national expert on child abuse and neglect and the author of numerous books and publications including Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect, Exploring Child Welfare: A Practice Perspective, When Children Are Abused: An Educator’s Guide to Intervention, A Clergy Guide to Child Abuse and Neglect and How Schools Can Combat Child Abuse and Neglect. Dr. Crosson-Tower taught in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts for 24 years, also founding and serving as the Director of the Child Protection Institute there. She maintains a private practice, Harvest Counseling and Consultation, specializing in the treatment of survivors of abuse and perpetrators of sexual abuse. Dr. Crosson-Tower served on the subcommittee to develop protocol for the Cardinal’s Commission of the Archdiocese of Boston and became a part of the Implementation and Oversight Committee of the Archdiocese’s Office of Child Advocacy.

Good text for the course I teach

Good text for the course I teach. BUT, it is WAY over-priced for a paperback textbook, and students have a hard time being able to afford it. That is a shame! I have used the textbook in a number of editions for many years, but am considering adopting something that is REASONABLE in price for my students.

good service, my book did come between the time that it said it was supposed to come-the last day they said the book was supposed to come. I suppose it still came and it promised it would come between the certain dates. Although I was stressed out because I needed the book for school I really cant complain because the book still came in the time frame. Thank you!

About the Author
Taeko Watanabe debuted as a manga artist in 1979 with her story Waka-chan no Netsuai Jidai (Love Struck Days of Waka). Kaze Hikaru is her longest-running series, but she has created a number of other popular series. Watanabe is a two-time winner of the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award in the girls category--her manga Hajime-chan go Ichiban! About the Author

A Must Have for the Do-It-Your-Selfer

This book is a must have for the occasional do-it-your-selfer. Being a compilation of all of the Don Casey books on sailboat maintenance, I find myself pulling this book off the shelf more often than any other maintenance book I own.

I find the drawings and step by step instructions to be well thought out and easy to follow. Geared for the occasional weekend warrior, this book shows you how to do it right while pointing out many of the pitfalls that often accompany a sailboat maintenance project.

I highly recommend it for those like me who own an aging sailboat but don't have a Pentagon sized budget laying on the side to give the yard.

the only book you need (almost)

This is compilation of 5 Don Casey's books, but only very small portions of material are doubled. There is part on marine diesel, but there isn't on marine gas engine. Fiberglass repair chapter describes only strightforward repairs of the hull. I couldn't find much info about propeler and rudder shafts repairs. But these are my only complains.

Besides it is excellent book full of very clear pictures. Great source of info about materials and paints, great chapter on AC/DC systems etc.

I probably won't buy any other "sailboat repairs" book.

No better book for a sailboat owner

I own a 30 foot sailboat that is just about 30 years old. Although my boat is in overall good condition, there are always things to touch up and fix.

I am extremely happy with this book and refers to it constantly before attemtption a new task. A few of the things I have used the book for:
- Refinishing interior wood
- Maintaining the engine (oil changes, valve settings, shaft alinghtment)
- Maintaining topsides (gelcoat repairs, general maintenance and upkeep, re-sealing deck hardware)
- Electrical work, troubleshooting stray currents and partial re-wiring
- Maintaining and fixing the head
- Canvas work is next. :-)

I am amazed at Don Casey's huge knowledge on sailboat maintenance and repair. I do not think there is a better or more copmlete book on the subject of sailboat maintenance.

I highly recommend this book for all sailboat owners. I can also reconmmend it as a gift.

Chris Blewitt--The Chemist

Chris Blewitt has written a riveting short story titled The Chemist, which is based on true events. Inspired by an article "The Chemist's War," written by Deborah Blum, a writer for Slate Magazine, who recounts the government's poisoning of alcohol during Prohibition as a means of deterring people from drinking the illegally made liquor, Blewitt has created an enthralling short story that places the reader at the center of this controversy and allows the reader to experience the events as if he or she was there in the thick of it.

Blewitt's story is set Philadelphia in the 1920's during Prohibition. The main character Charlie works as an industrial chemist for the Dupont Corporation. The story opens with an intense chase scene, causing Charlie to end up in the hospital. He is then forced to make a decision that, if agreed to, would set his brother free of prison. He doesn't realize his decision would have dire consequences until too late, his life as well as the lives of hundreds of others being changed forever. The story ends with his desire to rectify the problem that he has helped to create.

At the end of the short story, Blewitt offers an interview with Anne Helmenstine, a scientist and scientific writer, who explains how moonshine was made during the 1920's. She notes that certain types of alcohol can be used for human consumption while other types are poisonous. She adds that during Prohibition government officials, as a means of deterring bootleg alcohol consumption, added poisonous substances to the alcohol.

Blewitt's short story, The Chemist, is a very interesting and informative read, revealing some of the horrors of consuming bootleg liquor during Prohibition, incidents that were not widely reported on during that time. This story is a must-read for history buffs.

Government Secrets

"The Chemist" by Chris Blewitt is a short story about the days of Prohibition when the government added poison to alcohol to teach the people who were drinking it a lesson. Charlie is the main character who is sucked into doing things he doesn't want to do by two men who follow him and force him into committing crimes he otherwise wouldn't do in exchange for getting his brother out of prison. Little does he know who they are.

Before reading this short story I had never heard of this government practice. At the end of the story, there is a short piece by Anne Helmenstine about the different kinds of alcohol for consumption and those that are not. This definitely gives you something to think about from nearly a century ago.

An Enlightening Look Behind the Vatican�s Closed Doors

One young girl wrote in a book report "This book tells me more about hippopotamuses than I wanted to know." Unless you have a special interest in the Vatican inside story, this book may also tell you too much. But since the Roman Curia of the Catholic Church is one of the three most efficient corporate structures in the world, and since its work touches the lives of a billion Roman Catholics (and much of the rest of the world as well), and since its failings have been at the center of controversy in the Catholic world, the book is important. It is a well written and exhaustive summary of how the central Catholic government is structured and makes its decisions. The author, who has written on church governance at all levels, is a recognized expert in the field. Despite the controversial nature of the topic Reese treats the Curia fairly and objectively. Those who complain about the Curia should read this book, for while many of their complaints may be justified, they might be surprised at the amount and complexity of the work the Vatican does, the care and dedication with which they try to do it, and the problems and difficulties they labor under. The section on the internal culture of the Curia is particularly enlightening, and the author's concrete and professional suggestions for reform are valuable.

Ever wonder what it'd be like to be a Vatican bureaucrat?

Thomas Reese, Jesuit professor and journalist, has carved a very narrow niche for himself as an author, explaining the organizational mechanics of the Catholic church. Most people would find his books to have far too much detail, but there are a few, like me, who are curious about what really happens behind the closed doors of the Catholic administrative apparatus. His 1989 book, "Archbishop," described how dioceses are run, and "Inside the Vatican" describes how the Vatican functions. What decisions do cardinals actually make? What is it like to be a Vatican ambassador to a foreign country? What is it like to have a career as a Vatican bureaucrat? (One tidbit: No air conditioning!)
If these are things you've wondered about, this is the book for you. Reese approaches these things as though he were an anthropologist or a management consultant, with a keen eye for the nuances of interpersonal relationships within the Vatican bureaucracy. My only complaints are that the amount of detail can be overwhelming, and Reese sometimes gets bogged down in a wooden style of writing. It's best to start reading this book in the middle, because the beginning is rather dry. On the other hand, the anecdotes are a strong plus. To give one example, the story of John Paul II reprimanding the Archbishop of Denver to his face creates a mental image that is hard to forget.
The last chapter is the most provocative, where Reese suggests reforms that are both logical and unrealistic: He argues that Vatican administrators should not be allowed to become cardinals, which in papal elections would cause a monumental power shift toward those who are in closer touch with the laity. Reese suggests priests play a major role in selecting bishops, as was the case before the 1800s, in contrast to the current practice in which the pope appoints ultraconservative bishops who can't relate to anyone in their diocese.
According to Reese, the underlying problem is that the Vatican is more interested in doctrinal purity than keeping people in the church. Meanwhile the laity are voting with their feet, gravitating to pastors who ignore papal instructions, or leaving the church altogether.

Inspiring, beautifully illustrated and brings out the child in you

We had this book when I was a child. I have vivd memories of my father reading me the stories and of me and my siblings flipping through the pages and memorizing the illustrations. I believe this book inspired me well into adulthood, as an artist and illustrator (I have a bit of an obsession with gnomes!). I bought this book a few years ago and was pleased to find that it still held up to my expectations. Beautifully written and illustrated, this book is fun to pick up and flip through, or sit down and get lost in. The stories can be creepy or sweet. It is so imaginative and informative. Anyone wanting to learn more about gnomes, should get this book! The book is also good quality. It's a great gift for that magical friend of yours.

Delightful book with detailed illustrations and descriptive text

This is a delightful book. We had it when I was a child, and I have missed looking at the detailed illustrations and reading the wonderfully descriptive text about gnomes. Fits in perfectly with my (Swedish-based) world of gnomes (tomtar).

Unlike other macroeconomics texts, this book offers a through treatment of all the primary theories in macroeconomics, classical, Keynesian, monetarist, neo-Keynesian, real business cycles, etc, as well as a lengthy discussion of monetary policy. Convicting!

I am absolutely loving this pamphlet on idolatry! It's totally convicting and challenging me to look into my own life to see what idols I'm making! The best lines so far (Tertullian is great for his one-liners):

"All things, therefore, does human error worship, except the Founder of all Himself."

And something that particularly speaks to me, given where I go to school:
"To live with heathens is lawful, to die with them is not. Let us live with all; let us be glad with them, out of community of nature, not of superstition."

And finally, he ends with hope:
"Amid these reefs and inlets, amid these shallows and straits of idolatry, Faith, her sails filled by the Spirit of God, navigates; safe if cautious, secure if intently watchful."

They emphasize social and cultural history: the movement of peoples, including slavery, and of ideas, including Christianity, art, and literature; the development of trade, transport, and urban life; the impact of imperialism on food, dress, and recreation; and the emergence of new national identities. Imperialism can be a contentious issue. While not seeking to avoid controversial topics, The Cambridge Illustrated History of the British Empire is by no means a nostalgic look at a bygone era. It is a lively document chronicling an important part of our cultural history. It will be of wide interest to history enthusiasts, students, and scholars alike.

Another handsome volume from a distinguished series, the Cambridge Illustrated History of the British Empire begins its narrative after the American colonies achieved their independence and continues to the present. Spending anywhere from a few minutes to many hours with this book reminds us of how a 19th-century global superpower shaped so much of the modern world. Among its many colorful side bars are histories of Australia's convict origins, the city-state of Hong Kong, and the Suez Canal. An appropriate picture enriches the text on nearly every page.

Although the sun has set on the British Empire, it keeps rising over its globe-spanning legacy in the former colonies' language, political boundaries, economics, and ethnic composition. Marshall has devoted his academic career to that legacy, experience that lends comfortable reliability to this history. It is divided in half: he writes a concise narrative spanning the empire's recovery from losing its American colonies, its circa 1890s apogee, through its post^-World War II dismantlement. He then turns over the reins to specialists in themes of the empire, ranging from how it was ruled, whether it degraded or enriched the places it ruled, and even the art and architecture it inspired. The latter occasions a profuse burst of the paintings and photographs with which this handsome tome is endowed throughout. Although controversial, British imperialism is less profitably written of as a good or bad thing, as Marshall often remarks, than as a muddled, occasionally positive phase of history with effects as idiosyncratic as the myriad places over which the Union Jack flew. Well illustrated

The British Empire is a subject of particular personal interest, since I was born under the Union Jack in pre-1997 Hong Kong, and I'm still living in a former British Commonwealth country - a citizen of Canada. This book is full of photos, many in color. But it is low on maps - a dreadful error considering the subject matter.
The Opium Wars are only briefly mentioned. Surprising because of the importance of Hong Kong in the British Empire.
China, the chief victim of the Opium Wars, may have been the chief beneficiary of the British Empire. Opening the country by force and humiliation has resulted in war and revolution, which are now unleashing the energies of the people. China fell behind Europe since about 1500. Now, thanks to the British Empire, China is beginning to close the gap.
Had China not been opened up, its people would have fallen behind even further - and living at African levels of development. So while in the short-term the British Empire devastated China, in the long run it helped China change and modernize (rather like what the Americans did to Japan since Commodore Perry).
However, nothing would be more foolish than to think that the Chinese should feel gratitude to the British for setting this gigantic process in motion. It would be like asking the Jews to be thankful to Hitler for the Holocaust - even though similarly Hitler's crimes were a direct reason why the Jews have a homeland for the first time in two thousand years. Truly, the disgusting crimes committed by the British against the Chinese cannot be easily surpassed by anything else in human history - with the possible exception of the Holocaust itself. Maybe this is one reason why this is not discussed in this book - it's too sensitive. The Opium Wars are the moral abyss of the British Empire.
China has now recovered to the point where it may one day challenge America for world leadership. Britain, on the other hand, which led the world in trade and output in late 19th century, is now in sixth place for world trade and seventh place for GDP - and falling.
Ironically, the 19th century British Imperialists planning their conquests from London had no idea their work would have such unintended consequences just over a century later - a short time in world history terms.
This book does not address the issue whether Northern Ireland and Scotland are properly speaking part of the British Empire or part of Britain itself. Technically, the latter is true. But Scotland only became part of the UK in 1707 - arguably a key date in the history of the British Empire - and independent tendencies are already gathering pace there. Time will tell whether the UK itself will survive the dismemberment of the British Empire. My guess is, the lure of membership in the EU will drive the Scots and the English apart.
Overall this is a very good book, written by experts and the standards are high. The British Empire should be of interest to many since such hotspots as Bermuda, Gibraltar and the Falklands are still in British possession. Americans too may find the subject fascinating - since Colonial America was once part of the British Empire. Thanks to the British Empire, and even more to the fact that America is #1 in the world, English has become the universal language of our planet.
