Great Book for Budding Architects
By KH
I bought this book for my 9 year old son who wants to be an architect.
He LOVES the book. The activities range from simple to complex, so he can pick and choose based on his mood. We've done a few of them together, which is great for us because it gives us something to bond over--mom's don't usually have that much in common with 9 year old boys, but everyone loves to draw skyscrapers. It occupies him for at least 30 minutes, sometimes hours, which means less time in front of the TV, computer, or video games.

Fun book to create with
By Booklover Jerry
I like the Archidoodle: The Architect's Activity Book. It gets the juices flowing for creating unusual and interesting buildings you otherwise never would have designed. It isn't a textbook or anything on a technical training level but it is a fun book to just create away in. For example, you are instructed to design a house by a cliff and one by a waterfall all the way to design and draw a sectional view of a house that has been influenced by a machine. Some ideas are fascinating like design a funky-looking chimney or design some ideas for domesticated animals, (other than a dog), with one idea showing a cat basket that hangs off a radiator.
Some thought-provoking ones too like using a mountain slope, design in section the arrangement of a small thermal bath house and you are asked to consider views, light and privacy. So it can go from designing something simple to the very complex. I recommend this book to any novice architect, but I also recommend this to any pro out there too, because this book will get you to open up your skills and design things you might have never designed otherwise. There are plenty of buildings, cities and houses to design as well.

One bobble is that most scenes are set so one is a little limited by set scenes to draw a building or a city, but that too is a challenge I kind of like since it makes you think about how to overcome a set scene and yet still design a great house, building or city. Just keep in mind this is a fun book to just create in. I love this book and I think you will too.

Fun for a young teen
By T. Harris
This was a gift for my son who likes to draw. He has shown an interest in learning to draw buildings and is thinking of architectural drafting or rendering when he gets older. I though this would be a great book for him to get started on some basics and give him so activities to try on his own. He LOVES it! Lots of great examples of different parts of a building he can use to give a drawing more texture. He's 14 and this is at just the right level for him.

Fate of the Russian Revolution: v. 1: Lost Texts of Critical Marxism, by Max Shachtman, Hal Draper, C L R James, Al Glotzer, Joseph Carter

This book opens with a quotation from Albert Einstein, stating the case for socialism. Einstein, like almost every great mind of the 20th century who concerned himself or herself with the welfare of the working people, wanted common ownership and a democratic planned economy. But Einstein was stumped by the enigma of the USSR. He saw that there "the planned economy" was "accompanied by the complete enslavement of the individual" and so was "not yet socialism". It seemed to represent, on the one hand, a step in the right direction, because of the planned economy, but on the other hand, not a step that Einstein wanted to take.
Very few thinkers got anywhere near resolving the paradox. The greatest was Leon Trotsky. But Trotsky got no further than assessments of the USSR which he himself described as provisional and needing review if the system proved to have some solidity and viability, rather than being only a freak concatenation of counter posed forces.
When the Stalinist USSR showed that it did have that viability - by becoming the world's second superpower, in the 1940s - the task of reworking Trotsky's analysis had to be undertaken, not by well-provided professors in famous research institutes, but by tiny groups of Marxists harassed by the exigencies of day-to-day political activity in hostile circumstances. They have not become as famous as Einstein, or Trotsky. Their names - Max Shachtman, Joseph Carter, Hal Draper, C L R James - are largely unknown. But the "lost texts" of those "critical Marxists" - here unearthed for the first time from dusty archives, and well-presented with a substantial introduction - are a central part of the intellectual history of the 20th century. Every educated person needs to know about them, just as much as he or she needs to know about Einstein's theory of relativity.

Rescuing socialism from Stalinism
By Martin Thomas (martin@workersliberty.org)
Tony Blair says that his programme of making New Labour a "party of business" is the modern form of socialism, or, at least, "social-ism". The Chinese Communist Party says that fierce repression of workers' rights, together with fast and furious cutting of deals with capitalist multinationals and the open and avid pursuit of individual profit for the privileged, is socialism in a form suitable to China today. For others, socialism is what used to exist in the USSR and is now - to the sorrow of some, the joy of others - off the agenda. What is socialism? Even 150 years ago, in the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels marked off their working-class socialism sharply from a wide range of other socialisms, which they called reactionary socialism, bourgeois socialism, petty-bourgeois socialism, and utopian socialism. They had already criticised what they called the "crude communism" of levelling-down to equally shared poverty. Early radical socialists in Britain, people like William Morris, argued against anarchists but also saw a huge gulf between their own working-class politics and "state socialism", which they regarded as no better, or worse, than capitalism. Yet the accomplished fact often weighs heavier than a thousand good theories. The fact that state-owned industry gave the Stalinist USSR something approximately socialist in common with the heroic years of the revolutionary Russian workers' state after 1917 convinced many that there must be some real continuity. The USSR must, at the very least, be a distorted version of a system moving towards socialism, if not actually reaching it, and therefore deserved the loyalty of the labour movement. The events of 1989-91 put an end to all such hopes, and compelled many socialists to rethink. This book will be an immensely valuable contribution to that rethinking. It presents, with clear and informative commentary, the key "lost texts of critical Marxism" from a long-dispersed, long-marginalised, but brilliant, group of radical thinkers who demonstrated the fundamental conflict between working-class socialism and bureaucratic statism in the era when the USSR was at the peak of its political influence.

Update: It seems that Amazon is carrying a defective or out-of-date version which lacks the table of contents. One with the TOC is available from the publisher's website. If ordering it from Amazon, probably best to get the sample and see if it has been fixed.

This book runs to scores of documents across 600 closely-printed pages, but the e-book has NO TABLE OF CONTENTS. I want my four bucks back.

Jane, the Fox and MeFrom Walker Books Ltd

Hélène has been inexplicably ostracized by the girls who were once her friends. Her school life is full of whispers and lies — Hélène weighs 216; she smells like BO. Her loving mother is too tired to be any help. Fortunately, Hélène has one consolation, Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Hélène identifies strongly with Jane’s tribulations, and when she is lost in the pages of this wonderful book, she is able to ignore her tormentors. But when Hélène is humiliated on a class trip in front of her entire grade, she needs more than a fictional character to allow her to see herself as a person deserving of laughter and friendship.

Leaving the outcasts’ tent one night, Hélène encounters a fox, a beautiful creature with whom she shares a moment of connection. But when Suzanne Lipsky frightens the fox away, insisting that it must be rabid, Hélène’s despair becomes even more pronounced: now she believes that only a diseased and dangerous creature would ever voluntarily approach her. But then a new girl joins the outcasts’ circle, Géraldine, who does not even appear to notice that she is in danger of becoming an outcast herself. And before long Hélène realizes that the less time she spends worrying about what the other girls say is wrong with her, the more able she is to believe that there is nothing wrong at all.

This emotionally honest and visually stunning graphic novel reveals the casual brutality of which children are capable, but also assures readers that redemption can be found through connecting with another, whether the other is a friend, a fictional character or even, amazingly, a fox.

From Booklist
Pubescent Hélène sees herself as fat and beleaguered by her more popular and social classmates, so she turns to Jane Eyre to find a model for setting her prospects both high and anywhere other than her immediate circumstances. Britt’s well-constructed narrative is achieved sensitively through Arsenault’s impressionistic artwork, in which we see that Hélène is a pretty-ordinary-looking little 11-year-old in spite of her self-image. While her everyday life—which has become further burdened by an all-class camping trip—appears in a gray palette, when Hélène daydreams about Jane’s life, pastel washes and a vivid red appear. During the camping trip, Hélène comes across a red fox in the woods and begins to make some human friends. After a post–camping trip weigh-in, where she sees she’s perfectly normal, Hélène’s everyday world also takes on color. An elegant and accessible approach to an important topic, for readers of Erin Dionne’s Models Don’t Eat Chocolate Cookies (2009) and other novels about girls learning to cope with their own expectations of themselves. Grades 5-9. --Francisca Goldsmith

This book is just amazing. I have two pre-teen step children (fraternal twins) and find myself loathing their introduction to middle school, make up, intelligence, etc, etc, etc, etc. I bought this book for one of them and read it before wrapping it up, taking me about 15 minutes to do. Then I thought about it every day for days upon days. A book that appears to be so simple, that packs what I understand to be a very loaded and complex message about fitting in, self acceptance, self image and perceptions in general.

I still hate middle school.

Outstanding literature for young women
By S. Heggestad
Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. That's really all that needs to be said, in my opinion. But the wonderful message it carries for young women who find themselves unable to 'fit in', is worth noting. While this type of story certainly isn't new, the way the author weaves in her love for a particular piece of classic literature (Jane Eyre), is novel and intriguing. I found myself borrowing it from my pre-teen daughter, to whom I'd given it as a gift. My hope is that this book will become something of a family heirloom. It's really that gorgeous.

A welcome addition to my library
By Andria
I love this book: the writing, the illustrations, the humanity. And there is a fox! I don't know if all girls (even the mean ones) fall prey to other mean girls. If only I had had Jane Eyre tell me that I was not a sausage, life would have been easier. I want to place this in every pediatrician's office throughout the land.

From the Inside Flap
Within these pages are living portraits of fifteen Native American groups of Arizona and northern Mexico. The Navajos, the Western Apaches, the Hualapais, Yavapais, and Havasupais, the Yaquis, the Oaodham, the Tarahumaras, the Southern Paiutes, the Seris, the Colorado River Yumans--Quechan, Mohaves, Cocopas, and Maricopas--and the Hopis. Literally and figuratively, the paths they walk are the same paths walked by their ancestors, going back hundreds and even thousands of years. Through history, most of these groups have seen their homelands conquered by outside military forces and their people scattered far and wide. Yet, despite years of exile and subjugation, they have all kept alive their cultures, their sense of being a people. This book explores the symbols, rituals, and words that have ensured continuity and that distinguish each group from others. Equally important, "Paths of Life" describes the dynamic changes that are occurring in each group as new ideas are incorporated into traditional ways of life. The book focuses on one major cultural theme for each group. The chapter on the Navajos, for example, illustrates how the work of sheepherding reinforces the DinA(c) way of relating to one another and living off the land, while the chapter on the Yaquis examines how Catholic and Native rituals have become fused into a uniquely meaningful Yaqui religion. Throughout the book, the guidance and advice of respected Indian scholars have ensured both accuracy and authenticity. The pages in this volume are filled with individuals like Victoriano Churro, "a man who ran like a deer," and artist Grace Mitchell: "Iam going to weave a basket. Iall gather mulberry shoots, split them and rollthem . . ." There are glimpses of the Yaqui flower world, "Wilderness world / flower freely, is blowing, / wilderness world," and the Seri creation myth, "Slender whirlwinds coming from the sky touch the land. / Sounds of arrows / striking the ground, / roaring, / raising dust clouds." Here also are Father Sun and Mother Moon, Rock Crystal Boy and Yellow Corn Girl, Spider Woman, Wolf, and of course Coyote. Among the many books written about these groups, Paths of Life is rare for its breadth of information. The book includes dozens of photographs, both color and black-and-white, as well as a number of short asides, which discuss special points of interest. Readers in search of even more information will appreciate a carefully selected list of suggested additional reading. Encompassing anthropology, history, Native American cultures, arts, and folklore, at heart this is a book for anyone--teacher, student, armchair traveler, general reader--whose imagination has been captured by the lands and peoples of the Greater Southwest.

Great commentaries!
By Jenna Lindsay
I have this book for one of my college classes, and it is really interesting to have a book that is not just a dry ethnography. I think it holds true to how it describes itself in the introduction: "We want to investigate one central and fundamental theme--the persistence of ethnic identity in the face of constant change...about groups of people who have maintained a strong sense of their own ethnic identity in the face of conquest, persecution, exile, and in some cases attempted genocide." Interesting insights and analysis. Tells of past, current issues, contact with Euro-Americans, and possible futures of these peoples. An interesting read even outside of class.

Enlightening and reassuring
By A Customer
The title of this book (which hints at bad porno flicks) doesn't begin to do it justice. Ogden's research points out that, while 'sexual satisfaction' is defined as genital orgasm for both sexes, in fact women experience it very differently from men, as a more diffuse and 'cosmic' sensation. Labeling the male paradigm 'normal' and anything else 'not really an orgasm' has caused women to think of themselves as non-orgasmic when in fact they're perfectly normal women; it's led men to believe that women are hung up on foreplay and not the Real Thing. Ogden's conclusions are important and enlightening for both men and women, straight and gay, and reassuring for women who wonder whether their reactions are 'weird.' The anecdotal format of the book makes it frustrating to read at times, but it's definitely worth the effort.

Rocked my world
By Dan E. Nicholas
OK, rocked my world is a cliche and all but this book did. I read it a dozen or more years back while having not a clue I was facing the soon reality of a winding down, 28 year, dead horse marriage. My ex was not a little pissed at the time that I sought help in books like Ogden's here. I did my polite best to not leave out, navel up, this delightful book cover and title. I'd placed this thick paperback at my reading station back cover up with three or so other similar themed books I was reading then. I still love that in your face title and the sexy belly button cover pic. And I still like to leave it in a special place in my library shelf to tweak my friends and priest when he comes each year to bless our home; and any mother in laws that might not as of yet died of fright.

After doing the incredible grieving work to close down a bad marriage back then, I got busy trying to reconnect with a soul mate type woman. Dating at 54 and not having a clue is for certain no walk in the park. Without this book it would not have occurred to me that women exist who actually, as the title says, love sex. This concept is profoundly simple. Yes, this book got me believing that many women do love sexual connecting, not just intimacy with words. Yes, some would chose sex over love if made to pick. Sex is easy? Love is hard? Both seem pretty hard Gina seems to say. Through her work I came to see some are just basically and wonderfully slutty. How delightful was this truth to me as a man!

Needless to say I wanted one of those women, I said. In fact, I'd bring this book up often on coffee dates with women prospects I would meet online. If they couldn't talk candidly about this book, or a book with this title, or these concepts or this science here? Well, we were not going to go far together so why a 2nd date?

Due in part to Ogden here, I even started asking on the first coffee conversation with women what being orgasmic actually meant to them; and how a partner would fit in their world around orgasmic living. A great screening technique to this day. I recommend it.

What of the Rutgers University brain sex studies in Ogden's book? What of sex positive women who owned one of those Fried Green Tomatoes hand held workshop mirrors? Could a woman really go to that orgasmic place just meditating hands free? Well, if questions like this don't rock your world you are either brain and sex dead or just old and done. All Ogden's sex positive brain science topics were amazing to me at first read as I have always loved science. I later found Helen Fisher's Why We Love (bought my sons copies of that one); then I read the brain science and poetic beauty by Lewis and friends: The General Theory of Love. Gina got me started on this brain sex jag. Fascinating stuff. Still reading on this topic ten years later. Was looking for this book just the other day in fact as I'm now reading Barbara Carrellas and her Ecstasy Is Necessary, having followed her work the last decade also.

So, this book will give you religion. Warm, naked religion I'd say. And, yes, new faith that there are responsible, heart felt, deep, soulful women out there who love sex. I think now they proudly call themselves sluts. I love it; as a guy I have to say amen to that.

Thanks and hats off/pants off then for all the pioneers like Gina Ogden that got us to a place of increased honesty about our bodies and hearts and all our wonderfully naughty parts; and the celestial places they take us.

Buy this book. I see updates have been made and that Gina Ogden is coming out to California in a few weeks to do more training work for sex therapists and counselors. Good for her. And us. Women Who Love Sex: one of my top twenty favorite books on soulful loving. I still talk about it a decade later. That's the test for a book with legs and soul. Oh, and a nice navel on the cover helps, too.
