Rochman, an expatriate South African, selected these 10 stories by eight of her compatriots. As she points out in the introduction, the stories are grim; readers unprepared to confront the harsh realities of apartheid may well be shocked. The book opens with the brutal "Crackling Day" by Peter Abrahams, told by a black boy who gets a beating for having defended himself against a violent group of white schoolboys. Following that is "The Old Chief Mshlanga" by Doris Lessing, which is more subdued, but just as upsetting. Nadine Gordimer is represented by "Country Lovers" and "A Chip of Glass Ruby." Other stories describe a young black boy's father being taken away by police, the unlikely camaraderie between a white soldier and a black guerrilla, the silence of a rainy night in a black township after a firebombing. These thought-provoking tales present a stunning indictment of apartheid, although some contain powerful sexual references that may not be suitable to younger members of the target age group. Eight authors are represented by ten stories; the writers are black and white and range from the much-anthologized Doris Lessing, Nadine Gordimer, and Mark Mathabane to less-familiar names like Dan Jacobson and Ernest Havemann. Somehow Tenderness Survives is a worthy companion for other collections such as A Land Apart (Penguin, 1987), edited by Andre Brink, African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1985), edited by Chinua Achebe, and The Penguin Book of Southern African Stories (1986), edited by Stephen Gray. Although for the most part the stories in this latest collection are simple, even understated, in style, they are subtle. Reading this anthology may help high-school students to grasp the complex idea of how the most private corners of life are affected by systematic restriction and injustice. Life of Apartheid

This collection of short stories tells about the pain of living under the system of apartheid, from all points of view. Some of these stories are about black people who have to live as inferiors for their entire lives, while others are about white people who realize what kind of system this really is. No matter what side the speaker of the story is on, all of the stories tell of realization and pain and they exhibit over and over again what a bad way to live apartheid was.

I liked that each story was slightly different--some were about the rich, others about the poor, and every author had a different theme and a different purpose. I didn't feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. I tend to not like short stories, though, because they don't have the time to develop the characters to the extent I'd like. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters after each story ends.

An eye-opening book.

I was forced to read this book when I was in 6th grade; a few of the stories were selected by our reading teacher, and we were to read and comment on them. Given that it was a school assignment, I was not looking forward to it. However, I ended up devouring the entire book that same night. Growing up in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood meant I had never encountered the issues of apartheid and racism that the characters in this novel endured. Needless to say, I cried while reading the majority of those stories. It really opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, where it wasn't safe to be black in a country that was predominantly black. For the last four years, I taught special education in a junior high and a high school, and I used at least one of these stories each year to give my students a different perspective, and to help teach empathy. I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book when I was about 12 years old. I didn't understand it all at the time. It led to asking many questions and reading history, trying to find some answers. A powerful book.

He is like every one of us afterall

I spent the whole of last weekend reading 'Long Walk to freedom'. For two days I didnot leave the world Nelson had trapped me in. As I finished the book and took a walk outside, I stopped seeing people as Hausas or Yorubas, Northerners or Southerners(ethnic groups in Nigeria). All I saw were brothers who could bury the hatchets of ethnicity and forge a country of love and peace. Before I read the book I saw Mandela as a super human with no flaws at all. In the book he painted himself in true colours; accepting his flaws and proclaiming his successes. He is afterall human. I have always believed that life is worth nothing if one can not stand up for what one believes in. I have always advocated to the Marcus Garvey/ Malcolm X forms of freedom fighting. I always thought that peaceful protests were for the spineless. Why would I like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., watch while the enemy unleashes violence on my people? Nelson in the book took me through the intricacies of peaceful civil disturbance and I have come to realise that this form of protest is even more demanding than sheer brute force. 'Long walk...' is a must-read for any one who still has humanity in his being... Beware -- Abridged Version!

I have been wanting to read this book so finally ordered it. Imagine how surprised I was to open the book to the title page and it states: Abridgment and Connecting Notes by Richard W. Kelso! However, Amazon's web page never mentions this is an abridged version of the book. I am returning this copy to get the unabridged version of the book published by Little, Brown & Company in 1994.

Despite due respect for a great leader, I did not really expect to like this autobiography very much. Mandela is no great speaker, his TV presence is rather flat, his English apparently not masterful. The life story in summary does not seem to have that much interest either, considering the long jail time and the fact that most of the "hot action" of the anti-apartheid movement happened while he was on Robben Island.
All wrong. The writing is surprisingly fluent, the story telling surprisingly efficient and free of waste as well as redundancies. Also free of sentimentality and exaggerated pathos.
If there is anything that I wished to be more detailed it is the period of his childhood and youth. This period is described in a rather remote way and with a sometimes irritating lack of explanation or reflection. I realized that may have happened due to the conditions under which the book was written: in jail. Also I could imagine that editors suggested some shortening: after all the book is still quite hefty.
If there is one negative comment that I have to make, it refers to NM's insistence that all trouble between black groups, such as the Inkatha violence problems, or tribal conflicts, have been caused by the perfidy of the whites. As much as I can understand the psychology behind this wishful thinking, I do not think it is a realistic approach.
Despite this comment and despite the book's size, it is never boring. Highly recommendable.

About the Author
Michael Faudet has done many interesting things.

Most notable was enjoying an eighteen-year career, working for arguably one of the most creative advertising networks in the world.

During his time at DDB, he has held the positions of Director on the Australian management board, Managing Partner in New Zealand and Executive Creative Director in the Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne offices.

He has tutored extensively, guest lectured at universities, sat on many industry judging panels and has spoken at creative conferences around the world. Michael has also won numerous international awards in some of the most prestigious advertising shows.

In 2013, he decided to walk away from advertising to focus on his own creativity and writing. He helped launch the international best seller Love & Misadventure by author Lang Leav.

Michael's poetry and prose explores the many different facets of love and relationships. His whimsical and sometimes erotic writing quickly went viral and continues to attract a growing cult following of readers from around the world. He is represented by literary agency Writers House, New York.

His new book, Dirty Pretty Things is a #1 Best Seller and available now on Amazon and selected bookstores.

There is beauty in simplicity and Mr. Faudet has mastered it.

I was a huge fan of Michael Faudet’s debut collection of poetry, Dirty Pretty Things, and nearly died of excitement when I saw that his follow-up was on NetGalley. I had been eagerly anticipating the release of Bitter Sweet Love and went into it with high expectations. I was not disappointed at all! It was the perfect blend of dreamy imagery, naughty thoughts and heartbreak.

Essentially this book is a continuation of his debut and expands on the themes of love, relationships and sex. It features traditional poems, free verse and short stories that really appeal to your heart. Unlike his debut, Bitter Sweet Love is more about how humans interact, rather than about sex. Of course, there are several erotic poems, but I definitely preferred his poems that explored falling in and out of love the most.

As someone who usually doesn’t read poetry, Michael Faudet has a way of captivating me. It was dream-like and haunting and beautiful. It’s so difficult to explain. I just don’t have the ability to fully articulate how his words draw me in. All I can say is that his words speak to me on a very emotional level. There is beauty in simplicity and Mr. Faudet has mastered it.

Very dry and dull

I am an avid fan of horror movies and games, and was very much looking forward to this book. I was hoping for some insight into what it is that makes them so fascinating to me, and examples from games to expand on these insights. Although this does exist (at times) in the book at a certain level, it is so high and dry, so boring and dull that it could not hold my interest. Many terms and studies were referred to that I am not familiar with, and therefore unable to relate to. I stopped reading full pages and just scanned them about one quarter of the way through the book, and then just gave up all together soon after. If anyone else has read this book and found that the later chapters or articles were more interesting, please let me know.

This seems more like a book written for other researchers than a book written for fans (and in this case, may be a good reference for students). For me, there are far more interesting articles to be read in magazines and online; I was just hoping this would be a book that collected some of them together. Disappointing - especially considering the $30 price tag for a paperback book.

Charmng, Tragic and funny! I have read True Grit several times and loved BOTH movies as well. I'm now reading it with my 11 year old daughter, who loves it. (and there are so few books we can agree on!) A real "girl power" novel that's doesn't feel contrived or forced. Mattie's just a really strong character and in the end, the title "True Grit" is as much about her as it is about her tough guy guardian, Rooster Cogburn

Emma’s Dream is the first book in her new contemporary western romance series, Morgan’s Run! The second and third Morgan’s Run Romances, Lang’s Return and Jeb’s Promise come out in fall 2015! Her “day job” is as professor at a small New England liberal arts college. Her scholarly work centers around social contexts within which children learn and she is the author of three works of nonfiction. Her current research examines the impact of mindfulness on readers and writers, work that brings her tremendous joy and satisfaction. Lee lives in southeastern Massachusetts on a beautiful river, where she canoes, swims, and watches an incredible variety of wildlife pass by. She is the mother of two sons and spends lots of time with them, their beautiful wives, and her amazing grandchildren. Enjoyed reading this book about a couple reconnecting years after ...

Enjoyed reading this book about a couple reconnecting years after a brief affair which resulted in a four year old daughter which was unknown to her father. Emma was injured a an accident and left wheelchair bound until a risky surgery was performed which was successful. There was a few moments in the story where I wasn't sure where the story would end but it had a sweet ending.

Ben And Maggie had a 'one night' fling fives years ago. She left for college. He went on to California with his college buddies to make a name for himself. Now he is back. She is working for his father at Morgan's Run. This was as great story of second chances. She has a secret that she's kept from everyone but her dad. His mother wants him to settle down with the right type of woman. Not some stable hand. There are some angst going on. This is the first time I have read a book by M. Lee Prescott. Am looking forward to reading more.

I am not going to write a synopsis of the book here you can read that above, but what I will do is suggest you read this book. It reads really easy with enough back story and dialogue that it works. It's not a constant back and forth angsty drama that makes you want to pull your hair out but enough to keep you reading. It wasn't as clean as a christian romance but not smut erotica either. My only complaint would be Ben forgave awfully quick and easily. That said a quick read with a HEA. Can't wait to read the rest in this series.
