Get a good start on a new relationship

This book has excellent material for getting through the bumpy start-up of a new relationship or for getting through the low points of an existing relationship. But even more, Sandra Michaelson provides the positive guidance that takes a relationship into new territory. Recommended reading for anyone who wondered what it takes to be happy with a partner.

It was also recognized that the building of appropriate primary care systems to allow the assessment and implementation of health care priorities is only possible if the right information is available to health care planners - and this has led to the available to health care planners - and this has led to the development of a new classification system - namely, International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC). ICPC includes reasons for encounter classifications and thus is a patient- oriented rather than disease- or provider-oriented approach. Since the first edition of the International Classification of Primary Care was published, there have been extensive trials, particularly in Europe, and this second edition includes the lessons learnt from this testing, a detailed conversion system for linking the ICPC and ICD-10 codes published by the WHO, additional inclusion criteria, and cross-referencing to rubrics. This new edition has been carefully mapped to the ICD-10 codes and this has led to recognition that the two classifications are complementary rather than competing. Both WONCA and WHO are to jointly sponsor this new edition.

"It's been said "it's the journey, not the destination" but for comprehensive trail guides, I have always felt it's both and a lot in between. When a guide graduates from a simple handout, brochure or web listing (which are easy to find these days) into a book, it must not only meet the basics of getting us there and back.

I look for credibility of an author who has their feet on the trail with the ability to interpret and share the passion they have for a given area. A good Trail Guide book will not only justify it's place on the bookshelf for many years but will find it's way into the pack as well. Hiking Oregon and California's Wild River Country offers the opportunity for years of "journeys" for those willing to take the first step. The theme of "Wild Rivers", literally the circulatory system of this unique and diverse Klamath Mountain Province, could not be more appropriate as it weaves together the wild country within various wildernesses, research natural areas and national monuments. The inclusion of a Dedication by Willis Linn Jepson assured me that appropriate natural history expertise would follow.

I used to joke about never trusting trail mileages on Forest Service signs so I am always skeptical about trail data. My specific knowledge of this area is of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. To my delight, I found the entries to be exceptionally accurate. And they were comprehensive, ranging from mileages, land designations, natural history and including photographs, maps, and even elevation profiles. I doubt many seasoned trail veterans have set foot on all that is offered here while novices will be inspired and confident to take their first steps of a new journey. I hope my trail friends don't read this as I'll be getting a few gift copies to share with them."

About the Author
Justin Rohde spent much of his youth playing in the outdoors; snowboarding and mountain biking in Colorado, skateboarding in California, kayaking in Oregon and traveling throughout the west. Justin has completed field studies in Alaska, Costa Rica, Mexico, Arizona, Washington, California, and Oregon. He received a bachelors degree in Political Ecology, Conservation Biology and Ecopsychology from Prescott College (AZ) and earned an advanced certificate in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Denver.
Justin first began guiding hikers in the Illinois Valley in 2004 in the aftermath of the massive 2002 Biscuit Fire. Since 2008, Justin has been conducting fish surveys and habitat assessments in remote areas throughout southern Oregon. In his free time, he volunteers clearing trails and developing non-motorized recreation in the Illinois Valley. Justin maintains the largest database of current and historic trails in the area.

Inland hiking guide

First off, I should say what this book is not:
1) It is not a guide to the Wild Rivers Coast. All the hikes are inland.
2) It's not a peak climbing guide.
This book is a guide to hiking some of the wildest and most beautiful country around. This hikes seem to be selected for their beauty and/or natural history interest. The author leaves out some obvious hikes and focuses on less know hikes that offer an outstanding experience.

Okay book. Way too expensive for what you get. Not really anything new and different from other Southern Oregon hiking books. I realize the book was more of a personal goal of the author, rather then being a comprehensive guide, but I had hoped for more.

About the Author
RHODA KUFLIK is a World War II survivor whose family was forced to move from Poland, where she was born, to Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Italy until they could finally make it to America. She was 11 years old when she arrived in Brooklyn, NY, and started her formal schooling. A graduate of Brooklyn College with a major in psychology, Kuflik became a social worker. She married and had three children. She and her husband now divide their time between New Jersey and Florida, where Rhoda has pursued her interest in singing Yiddish songs. She brings a lot of pleasure to scores of people in Florida who have not heard these songs (or this language) in many years.

This scathing indictment of U.S. Central American policy by an American novelist and a Panamanian journalist chronicles 21 years of misrule from the advent of Omar Torrijos to the fall of Manuel Noriega. In describing the power struggle following Torrijos's death in 1981, Koster and Sanchez charge that the Reagan administration helped Noriega, its "protege and accomplice," steal the '84 election, and they scoff at George Bush's claim to have been unaware of Noriega's involvement in drug traffic. The book deals primarily with the crimes and cruelties of Torrijos ("a tyrant, murderer, and thief") and Noriega ("an entirely untrustworthy, totally amoral, sadomasochistic sociopath"), and reveals how the U.S. "midwifed" the Panamanian dictatorship into existence in '68, supported it materially and morally in its various permutations, then cut out the very cancer it had created in last year's military intervention. A credible, informative report, it is, however, studded with angry charges not supported with documentation, for example, that Bush, when vice-president, shared a metaphorical bed with the dopers.

Researched and written several years before the downfall of Manuel Noriega, this book is a powerful indictment of U.S. policy in Panama. The authors (Koster is an American novelist and Borbon is an exiled Panamanian journalist) concentrate on the conflict between "visible" U.S. government policies and the "invisible" arrangements set in place by the CIA. The most effective sections of the book are the inside accounts of the abuses of power by Omar Torrijos and the brutality of Noriega's regime. Koster was an eyewitness to the U.S. invasion of Panama in December 1989, and he contributes an appropriate concluding chapter to the saga. Panama's descent into tyranny does not make for easy reading, but this is an extremely important book for any serious student of American foreign policy. Some of the authors' specific claims may be conjecture, yet the overall effect of the book is chilling and thought-provoking. For academic and public libraries.

Essencial History of Panama and the dynamics of a dictatorship

I am biased towards this book. My father wrote it and I lived through some the events or observed while living abroad. This is required reading to understand American foreign policy in Latin America, Panama today, and the dynamics of military governments. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

The Tyrants, the USA and Panama

I found a copy of the Time for Tyrants in Panama in 1999, and read it in total fascination. I had my own background having visited the country periodically since the period of Torrijos in the 70s, and was a frequent visitor in the period 1986 to 1989, while my firm was trying to complete a contract there.
The book provides a no holds barred detailed account of how the systematic corruption developed under Torrijos and how the torch or key to the cash box was passed to Norriega.
The book records the initial visits by Torrijos to Sweden in the 70s related to major power projects which started the cash flowing, and thereby established the rewards for those that controlled the government. Torrijos and then Norriega set up and maintained the system of total control by non elected individuals.
An important element of this book by Koster and Sanchez is their description of how the US government supported the various tyrants as part of their Canal policy throughout this period until the last year of so of Norriega's reign.
During the last two years of Norriega up to the American invasion the book details the murder, torture, kidnapping and destruction of democracy that were directly orchestrated by Norriega, and the failure of the half hearted attempts by the US government to control or remove him.
As the book recounts, the last two terrible years of Norriega were not necessary. The US government could have dealt with the problem earlier, and avoided the misery that fell on Panama.
During my visits through 1988-1989 I was witness to the abuse of Norriega's "dobermans", and the resistance, especially from the white collar segment of the population. Panama was a seriously dangerous place for everyone at that time.
Koster and Sanchez also imply that there is a culture in Panama that made this saga posible. That Martin Torrijos (son of Omar) could be a credible and nearly successful candidate for President in the 1999 elections illustrates this message only too well.

All of Panama's history except for...........

This book is certainly one of the most comprehensive on Panamanian history. Within its pages are a treasure trove of historical information on Panama's past history and the author put forth an great amount of effort in his reasearching of available information for this book.
Mr. Koster left out a very important event, perhaps by accident, seeing as he was unaware, that in 1979, Panama was invaded by an armed force of Americans, who had planned to overthrow the late General Omar Torrijos and assassinate his military intelligence chief (Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Noriega).
I should know, I was one of those involved in this effort and I have written a book ("Panama-Echoes From A Revolution"), which tells all about this long forgotten piece of Panamanian history.
My book certainly adds this historically important part to Mr.Koster's great work.

Complex and involving

The Wind Chill Factor isn't necessarily an easy book to read. The plot is complex and if you don't keep up with the different twists, it would be easy to get lost in the details. However, this is absolutely one of the most richly written books I've ever read. The sensations the lead character experience become the reader's sensations; his thoughts, your thoughts. Once you commit your energy to the story, you'll be hard pressed to put the book down until you are finished.

Dont Cry for me Minnesota

1972: Drat! We have Nixon AND resurgent Nazi sleeper cells here and around the globe? John Cooper is recently divorced and eking out an AA-assisted writer's existence in Cambridge, MA when he receives a cryptic telegram from his elder brother, who is inexplicably in Buenos Aires:
"URGENT YOU MEET ME COOPER'S FALLS 20 JANUARY. DROP EVERYTHING. FAMILY TREE NEEDS ATTENTION. CHEERS OLD BOY. CYRIL."
So home to the family namesake Cooper's Falls, Mn goes John Cooper. This Ludlum-esque page-turner had me as soon as John Cooper's Lincoln swung northward in Chicago and headed on the long ago familiar Illinois Tollroad trip towards home in Minnesota - with a stop at "one of the Fred Harvey emporiums." Almost run off the road near Madison in a blizzard, John goes home to revisit old family secrets. Then round and round the globe he goes, where it stops only author Thomas Gifford knows. I was up all night following the intrigue!

Electrifying story of a complex family

I am amazed and shocked at the vitriol and venom expressed against Gifford in some of these reviews! It's a sign that Gifford is a challenging writer.

It also surprised me, in 1972, that this book was never made into a movie. "Soon to be a major motion picture" said the cover. It never happened.

To the naysaying and nitpicking reviewers, I say, "Grow up." Gifford has captured something ugly and important here in this book. I used to audit county courts and county governments. Later I worked for a chief financial officer who lied under oath to a congressional committee and was fired by the organization's board. I've seen a lot of ruthless, petty, dishonest people.

And this book is a masterpiece in collecting such personalities. It ranks with Robert Towne's immortal screenplay for "Chinatown." And it is almost a screenplay itself. The main character is a literate but down-on-his-luck divorced movie buff, John Cooper, who makes innumerable references to classic motion pictures. He becomes a friend of the local police chief, a boy wonder who got away from the big city force by marrying a rich woman, like Dashell Hammit's Nick Charles.

The tale boomerangs through three continents. These things happen. There are villians like this out there.

If you like this book, you will also like the sequel, "The First Sacrifice" and a triumphant nail-biter about counterfeiting, "The Man from Lisbon," which I think is Gifford's best book ever.
