It is by no means a "how-to" section. Sites, logistics, and the wrecks themselves vary so much that, like wooden shipbuilding, this discipline can never become an exact science. Rather, the third part of the book discusses work done on previous projects and suggests additional methods that might prove helpful to readers in their own endeavors. The book contains an illustrated glossary, specifically designed for archaeological use. There is also a select bibliography, annotated where titles do not indicate content and arranged in historical groups to provide sources for most areas of research.

About the Author
J. RICHARD STEFFY'S lifelong interest in ships and seafaring was directed toward nautical archaeology in the mid-1960s. Since then, he has been involved in numerous shipwreck excavation projects in Europe, Asia, and North America. His most recent research has been directed toward ancient and early medieval craft. He was awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship in 1985 in recognition of his contributions to the field. He was the Sara W. and George O. Yamini Professor of Nautical Archaeology, Emeritus, at Texas A&M University and the Institute of Nautical Archaeology.

An essential text for anyone aspiring to enter the field of Nautical Archaeology.

Steffy, one of the founding fathers of the discipline of Nautical Archaeology along with George Bass and arguably THE pioneer of ship preservation, has attempted to lay out much of his vast knowledge in this text, published in 1994. His incredible attention to detail is evident in all of the case studies that he has chosen for this book, and nothing - right down to the direction that the grain runs in a trennel - escapes his notice. His interpretations of his case studies may be exhaustive, but so is the glossary in the back of the book. If he uses a word that you don't know, just flip to the glossary and it is probably defined there, often along with a helpful sketch to really help you get the concept.

The sheer volume of information and depth of description does make the book a little dry to read, but it still isn't quite as dry as standard archaeological reports. While Bass has a more exciting writing style, no one can pack as much information into a page as Steffy can while keeping it fairly interesting. Steffy is, however, not a miracle worker, and you should pursue this book as more of a reference book than the kind of book that you read straight through.

This text is assigned for undergraduate and graduate level nautical archaeology classes in every university that offers them, and for good reason; it should be considered an essential work by anyone who is studying to enter the field.

Conservative historian Paul Johnson wears his ideology proudly on his sleeve in this often ruthless dissection of the thinkers and artists who (in his view) have shaped modern Western culture, having replaced some 200 years ago "the old clerisy as the guides and mentors of mankind." Taking on the likes of Karl Marx, Bertrand Russell, Lillian Hellman, and Noam Chomsky in turn, Johnson examines one idol after another and finds them all to have feet of clay. In his account, for instance, Ernest Hemingway emerges as an artistic hero who labored endlessly to forge a literary style unmistakably his own, but also as a deeply flawed man whose concern for the perfect phrase did not carry over to a concern for the women who loved him. Gossipy and sharply opinionated, Johnson's essay in cultural history spares no one.

Does it really matter that Henrik Ibsen was vain and arrogant, that Jean-Paul Sartre was incontinent? In Johnson's view, it does: these all-too-human foibles disqualify them, and other thinkers, from presuming to criticize the shortcomings of society. "Beware intellectuals," he concludes (though, given the subjects of his book, it seems he means intellectuals only of the left). "Not only should they be kept well away from the levers of power, they should also be objects of particular suspicion when they seek to offer collective advice." Whether one agrees or not, Johnson's profiles are frequently amusing and illuminating, as when he suggests that the only proletarian Karl Marx ever knew in person was the poor maid who worked for him for decades and was never paid, except in room and board, for her labors. --Gregory McNamee

The central theme of Johnson's new book is "Beware intellectuals!" Johnson examines the rise of the intellectual as a sort of secular seer and moral arbiter, a role once filled by the priest or soothsayer. These intellectuals, starting with Rousseau, promote themselves as possessing the moral authority to transform society, a claim that Johnson disputes. He approaches his subject through a selective series of ad hominem case studies, including Shelley, Ibsen, Tolstoy, Marx, Hemingway, Brecht, Sartre, Hellman, and others. The focus is more on what Johnson takes to be the moral contradictions of these individuals than on their ideas. As such, it is more interesting as literary gossip than intellectual history.

Fascinating Read, But Flawed Argument (Maybe)

Paul Johnson's Intellectuals is a must read for anyone who loves history, philosophy, biography, or just plain juicy gossip. It's style is wonderful - fast paced with clear prose that makes you feel like you are being told a good, gripping story. There are enough details, backed by extensive notes, to keep you well informed, but not so much that the non-history buff will find his eyes glazing over. There is also some solid factual ammunition for conservatives in Johnson's account of Marx's utter lack of scholarship.
Perhaps the one serious drawback about the book is that Johnson does not really draw out the argument which it was written to make. Johnson wants to call into question the authority of intellectuals who lead immoral lives to give the average man advice about life, but other than raising the question, he does little to draw the argument to a logical conclusion. Reciting the numerous vices of the intellectuals in question is not an argument. It must be connected with some other proposition, such as that those who are immoral are intellectualy unreliable, or that bad ideas come from bad people, in order to make a case. In the end, Johnson fails to do that, and the book ends up more like a circumstantial ad hominem (at its best) or an extended gossip column (at its worst).
I would recommend the book as a delightful, informative read, but if you are looking for logical argumentation, you will have to supply your own. Intellectuals supplies the conservative with a great deal of material from which to create a premise, but the logical form and the conclusion will have to come from some other source.

An attack on delusional arrogance

This is a funny and truly provocative book. By "intellectual", Johnson means scientists or artists who go well beyond their abilities and try to design new codes of behavior, new systems of government and new moral rules for the humankind. That is, people who, just because they are good at doing something, think they get the moral right (and duty) to tell the rest of the world how to conduct their affairs.
Through several biographic essays, Johnson shows just how dangerous some intellectuals can become, and at the same time he shows us the low level of their ethical record. Undoubtedly, he exaggerates at some points, and in some other his gossipy is too much, but beyond that, his thesis is valid and solidly grounded. I agree with the central idea: that being a good poet, playwright or mathematician doesn't mean that one is qualified to give opinions about every possible subject, the more politicized, the better. Johnson correctly rejects utopianisms and Messiah-like behaviors. Of course, the bad moral credentials of these people does not diminish the quality of their work in the least, but the book rightly states that arrogant intellectuals are also capable of saying and doing stupid things. Don't buy it? Check out newspapers and magazines and see European and American "intellectual celebrities" talk about complex conflicts in other parts of the world, of which they know nothing but nonetheless give radical -and frequently imbecile- opinions.

Beware Intellectuals!

Paul Johnson takes on a line-up of first class intellectuals spanning three centuries, and declares: Beware Intellectuals.
By shining a bright light on the dark side of these very public figures - on their greed, their lust and promiscuity, their deceit and arrogance, and especially the despicable way they treated those around them, including and especially their spouse and children while proclaiming selfless love for humanity, Johnson made a strong case on how only human these luminaries truly were. And posed the question as to how fit intellectuals really were in preaching to others how they should manage their affairs.
You will find an idol or two of yours deflated as you read Johnson's well-researched book. Some would argue that the merits of a man's ideas are independent of the man himself. This is certainly true with scientific ideas (or theories), which can be empirically validated. Albert Einstein, Edward Teller, or even James Watson were not necessarily what one wants for close friends, but one would not reject the theories of relativity, thermonuclear reaction and the double-helical structure of DNA for the personal failings of these scientists. On the other hand, one must wonder aloud the value of the social theories proclaimed by the intellectuals who somehow saw their theories fit for the masses but not for themselves!
Perhaps this book is one-sided. It mostly picked on the leftists. I am afraid the raw statistics are also quite one-sided. It is the vision of the left to see themselves as an anointed group who are destined to "run things" to make a better world. Regardless, I am inclined to think that the intellectuals on the right are just as hypocritical, if fewer in number.
One key point well argued in this book is that the talent of people in one area, which renders them famous, does not give them license to mentor mankind in all affairs. One sees this folly everyday with many Hollywood and other media celebrities.
"Intellectuals" is a joy to read. While Johnson harshly critiqued the dark side of these intellectuals, he also presented them in the proper historical context and gave due to the epochal importance of their work where it was appropriate. Johnson's writing style was graceful and engaging. Like a good historian, he was meticulous with facts and data, which, though selected to support his thesis, were factual nonetheless. This book, besides being informative, has given me quite a refreshed perspective on intellectuals. It is one of those books that you read and think about again and again because it is rightly provocative.

you will love this book

I got this book because I'm a reader of the author's blog, My Man's Belly. Though I'm mostly a vegetarian, I was transfixed by the range and creativity of the recipes with their unusual flavor profiles and ingredients that clearly demonstrate Pamela is a world traveler. I would have never thought of these unique combinations myself (and my palate is no slouch), and it was quite the eye-opening education in jerky since my perception of it before was 7-Eleven road trip fare. If you're a carnivore, you will love this book! Even if you're not, it's a great read with some fruit and veg jerkies that anyone with a dehydrator or a little patience would want to make.

As one of Pamela's jerky taste testers, I can tell you that her recipes do work, and the results are delicious. My friends and I tasted almost every recipe that went into this book when she was writing it. That Whiskey Pete jerky? BEST ever. Trust us. We tested that several times as the result was, ahem, inconclusive...must try more samples. Seriously, though. That's one of our favorites and there were many more. Even the vegetable ones came out great too. Buy it for your friends and family this holiday season. You won't regret it!

Both his flute teachers recommended this book. This is the short version. Amazon.com also sells the 64 pages version too. This would have been fine but our son has decided to major in music so we need the FULL 64 page version.

Notes too small

The supplier provided the music promptly. The reason I had ordered Taffanel and Gaubert in this different format was to, hopefully make page turns more convenient and less frequent in order to place less wear and tear on an often-used exercise book. I liked the size and shape of the music. Unfortunately Whirlwind press chose to make the print size so small that the notes are difficult to read. Also, not a lot of thought was put into the page organization and many of the same kinds of page turns are necessary. I'll keep this as a backup but continue using my old copy, dogeared or not, as my principle music.

About the Author
Abigail A. Baird is a Professor of Psychology at Vassar College. She earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and both a M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Following completion of her Ph.D. She was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, at Dartmouth College. Her numerous articles and presentations have covered topics such as adolescent brain development, cognitive regulation of emotion, juvenile justice, and manifestations of racial bias in mind brain and behavior.
Abigail's research has received awards from Harvard University, the Society for Research on Psychopathology, and in 2008 the Association for Psychological Science named Abigail a "Rising Star in Psychological Science". Her research has also led her to be elected to several scientific societies including the International Society for Behavioral Neuroscience and the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research. Abigail has been repeatedly recognized for her excellence in teaching. In 2000 she received Harvard's George Goethals Teaching Prize, and in 2004 was awarded the Class of 1962 Excellence in Teaching Fellowship by Dartmouth College. Her professional accomplishments also include serving as secretary of the Association for Psychological Science, Honorary Faculty Member for the Order of Omega National Honor Society, Invited Faculty to the New York State Judicial Institute and Advisory Board member on the Campaign for Youth Justice.

Good Thinking

Regardless about how one feels about the "politics" of this book, this is a great text by virtue of how each page presents more correct and usable information than most of the contemporary textbooks currently on the market. And for the money it's a fantastic buy! The graphics/pictures are excellent in their vibrancy and detail. The up-to-date research has to put smiles and wonderment on instructors and students respectively. The "upclose and personal" chapter introductions make the course content real and contemporary, e.g., Megan Meier & the Close sisters. I really dig the timeline fold out in the back. For an introduction/general course Ms. Baird's text is a model/standard to be studied by students, instructors, and authors.

Engaging Text Book in Hybrid Magazine Style

This textbook is thin, but packed with information that's displayed in a captivating and interesting method. Since the publisher wants potential customers to sign up just to preview the inside, I will break down the layout:
-The chapter title pages have a full or double-page picture with a short event that relates to what the chapter is about and then the main content is set up in pretty much the same logical layout as your standard text book.
-There are a lot of different types of graphs scattered appropriately throughout each chapter. Most of the pictures have captions asking the reader to think about and relate the picture and the content in critical ways.
-The vocabulary terms are conveniently boxed on the side AND placed in bold font within the text.
-The chapter ends with a concise summary and a little review test of 20 questions per chapter.
-The text is split into three columns instead of two, which is a great way to break the text up into easy-to-read pieces.
The general style that the textbook was written in is witty yet efficient, and all of the information in it is current enough to be quite relate-able.

Great text book

I am very happy with this book. The chapters are short and engaging with colorful text and illustration. It is also well written. Many text books are dry and not as enjoyable or accessible as this text. I think more schools need to start using this style book. It's more like a magazine than a text book. My favorite part is the humor. The author really knew what they were doing when they wrote this book.

By tracing the history of the terms 'semantic' and 'pragmatic' in linguistics and philosophy, Saihong Li shows the weakness of any conceptual distinction between them. She goes on to demonstrate how inappropriate these terms are for thinking about the ways in which words are defined and explained in dictionaries. The theoretical argument is supported by detailed and comparative empirical research: learners of English as a second language in both China and Denmark were interviewed about their experiences as users of standard learner's dictionaries. The results are presented in tabular form and their interpretation is statistically informed. This is a path-breaking study. Saihong Li makes an important contribution to lexicographical theory, and advances a sophisticated methodology for the comparative study of English-language leaning on an international scale and in the global marketplace of learner's dictionaries. Her work will be of great value for language teachers, lexicographers, and students of interpretation, translation and language pedagogies. 'To Inform and Define' should also attract serious attention from editors and publishers of learner's dictionaries.

About the Author
Saihong Li was born in 1972, in Tieling, north-eastern China. She studied English for the BA at Liaoning Normal University; her MA in Applied Linguistics is from Dalian Maritime University. She was a lecturer at both of these universities, in English and Linguistics, and in 2001 was a visiting researcher at Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 2002 Saihong was awarded a scholarship to pursue further research in translation studies, lexicography and language pedagogies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Since then she has been a teacher of Chinese and Linguistics at the University of Copenhagen, the University of Southern Denmark and the Copenhagen Business School. In 2006 she was awarded a stipend for doctoral research and in 2009 was awarded the PhD by the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies at the University of Copenhagen. Her dissertation on lexicography and language learning forms the substance of the present publication. In 2010 Saihong moved to the UK to take up a position as Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Chinese at the University of Salford. Her experiences have straddled diverse cultures, languages and disciplines; her theoretical reflections are informed by many perspectives, all of which contribute to her practice as a teacher.
