The Power of Good, With Reality a Bit Suspended

I was just 6 years old when The Untouchables series began running on television, but I have vague memories of the noirish feel of the series and the expressionless, determined face of Robert Stack as Eliot Ness. Kevin Costner's Ness never really took the place of that neo-human hero of the late fifties and early sixties, in atmospheric black and white.

My impression of Ness's own story, told in this book, is close to that mythological Ness. The book feels more like a novel than a modern autobiography. I've heard that Ness exaggerates his own role in the events he describes -- I don't know whether that's true or not. But the narrative is smoother than real life. Ness radiates a kind of all-conquering goodness, enhanced with clever tactics and the loyalty of an equally incorruptible team. Good conquers evil, because, well, good is just so . . . good.

We can fault Ness for self-aggrandizing myth making. But, setting that aside, it's fun reading. Ness is a man on a mission. He rejects the corrupt peace that the police and the criminals, most notably of course, Al Capone, have reached. The police force and prohibition agents are ruined by "bad apples" -- the fatal moral weakness that allows Capone and others to rule Chicago in the twenties and thirties. Ness devises a simple plan, a "small select squad" with "no bad apples" -- a team whose greatest strength is its moral incorruptibiity.

As the team goes to work, busting breweries and distribution networks, the bootleggers realize that this is a different game. They can't buy victory, they'll have to outfight and outmaneuver Ness's team. But Ness's team is as determined to bust them as they are to make money and build power. When the bootleggers adopt new tactics, Ness and his team figure out new ways to defeat them. It really is a good story, and the good guys win.

I do have to mention one odd departure from the facts in the book. Betty Andersen appears in the book as Ness's girlfriend, and, in the book's Epilogue, Ness's co-author, Oscar Fraley, notes that she later became his wife. There is no mention of Edna Staley, who was actually Ness's wife during the time covered by the book. Ness and Betty Andersen did marry, but only after his divorce from his second wife, Evaline Ness, in 1946. We can only suspect that this cleaned-up version of his personal life is not the only cleaning up of the facts in the story that Ness tells.

The story makes better reading if we accept that the truth may have suffered a bit, or more than a bit, in the telling.

Nice follow-up to Fraley & Ness's book

This is an interesting tale, well told. Fraley certainly had the knack of getting these stories down on paper. His co-author and subject, Paul Robsky was one of the "Untouchables", immortalized on TV by Robert Stack as Eliot Ness. Ness's own story is covered by Fraley's previous book, "The Untouchables".

In this version of the story, Eliot is merely another one of the Untouchables, not the leader. Eliot is the go-between for communications from the US Attorney General and the Untouchables. Mostly they worked in pairs, pursuing their own line of investigation into the bootlegging industry.

In the one story where Eliot and Paul both appear (the tapping of phones at Capone's hotel), the two stories pretty much match up. Otherwise Paul doesn't really mention Eliot much.

This is a well-written story about a time that's getting harder and harder to imagine as it recedes into the past. A real slice of history.

I have the tv series and had been looking for a copy of this book since I was in school and watching the tv show as a child.I found the book to be very interesting and after receiving it I had to make myself stop reading it so as to eat,sleep,and work.I read the intire book in three days,it was that interesting.I also have all of the Dragnet series and the Untouchable's series along with all the Adam-12 series that have been released that I know of.

About the Author
David Long is a Partner in Oxford Petroleum Research Associates (Opra) and specialises in the operation and development of oil and gas markets. He is a regular contributor to newsletters published by Petroleum Argus Ltd, and research reports published by the Centre for Global Energy Studies (CGES) in London. His interests include the development and application of new trading techniques in the oil and gas industries and he has been involved in the preparation of training material on swaps and options and development of computer software for analysing oil price behaviour. David began his career with BP in 1977, where he worked in Corporate Planning and Supply Departments. He spent two years on secondment at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, studying the development of forward paper markets in oil, before joining the institute as a Research Fellow from 1986 to 1989.

About the Author
Wendy Hendry is considered one of the most inspiring people in the fitness industry.  In addition to being a fitness instructor and owner of Sweaty Chix Fitness, she has motivated people in her role as Health and Wellness Coach and entrepreneur. 

Wendy's passion for health and fitness was driven by her own personal struggle with food addiction and obesity.  In her own personal pursuit of health and healing, she began on a journey that would eventually strike a flame in thousands to get active.  Eventually becoming an expert in nutrition as well as fitness, her W.A.I.T. and Click approach to mindful eating has influenced thousands more to overcome food addictions and unhealthy habits.     

Wendy received her Bachelor's degree in Microbiology from Brigham Young University and is co-founder of Biolynk Corporation, an Antibody Recruitment Company. 

She currently lives with her family in the beautiful mountain community of Mapleton, Utah. When she's not helping clients or at the gym with her husband, she can be found reading Jane Austen, contemplating the amazing blessings God has given her, and arguing politics with her children.

Liked some of it

I read this book because Kathryn Hansen recommended. The first half i did not care for as it is what we all know already and have heard a million times before. Food advice which sounds like diet talk to me. She also talks about tracking your food and recommends OA or weight watchers for support if needed ( which I've done all 3 and all were restriction which caused bingeing for me when I stopped so this is not good advice from someone stating they are against diets).
Then she talks about Kathryn Hansen's book (who wrote great books!) and just does a short summary. Again already stuff I knew (although if someone is not familiar with Brain Over Binge and this brief overview gets them to Kathryn's books then great).
The one thing I did take away that was new was the clicker method she recommended as you use a clicker when you resist urges and try to get more clicks as a reward. I will try that and see if it works for me. So I give it 3 stars for that one new idea I got out of the whole book.

She received her academic training in Microbiology from Brigham Young University and is co-founder of Biolynk Corporation, an Antibody Recruitment Company. She also is the owner and trainer of Sweaty Chix Fitness, where she has motivated people in her role as Health and Wellness Coach and entrepreneur, praised for her expertise in nutrition as well as fitness: her W.A.I.T. and Click Approach to mindful eating has influenced thousands more to overcome food addictions and unhealthy habits.

We get a strong idea of where we are going with this guide from Wendy’s Self Evaluation: ‘When I first started my health journey, I did a self-evaluation to determine where my current reality was. I was shocked to take the same evaluation a year later and see how far I had come. I promise if you begin applying the keys here, you will see amazing personal improvement in both your physical and mindful health. Let’s start then by focusing on YOU. I highly encourage you to grab a piece of paper, write down where you are now, and then compare it to where you are in six months or a year from now. Breaking free from any addiction, including food, requires a change in habits, both physical and mental. It takes time for habits to develop, and sometimes the change is gradual. This self-evaluation is a great way for you to see how far you have come. And don’t get me wrong. You WILL begin feeling better right away. Diets do not work! I know this because I’m pretty sure I have tried every diet in the entire world. As a matter of fact, at one time I dieted my way up to about 200 pounds. Diets do the opposite of what we want them to do. Diets make us fat. What this book does give you are the keys to food freedom! Applying these principles will teach you the habits you need to break free from an unhealthy relationship with food. Most diets have you lose weight with the hope that you will get healthy. This may work short term, but permanent weight loss and optimal health require a permanent change in behavior. By applying the keys to freedom, you will find yourself getting healthier, and the happy consequence will be a healthy weight.’

Then we get to the significance of the book’s title (and the core of Wendy’s expertise – no, genius!) the W.A.I.T. – and-Click Approach: ‘W.A.I.T. is an acronym that I developed to help in my own health journey. It stands for— What Am I Thinking? W.A.I.T. acts as a cue for us to slow down and take time to breathe. It gives us time to ask if we are actually hungry and if not, to figure out what is triggering the urge. W.A.I.T. is also symbolic. The results of our efforts aren’t always immediate, and that’s part of the W.A.I.T.’

But to write more in a review would be to prevent the reader from the discovery of Wendy’s journey to and from obesity, her very accurate depth of nutritional scientific knowledge, her irresistible humor, and her very successful results she encourages us to join. This is a splendid book on so many accounts and one that is recommended most highly (have you looked around and noted all the obese people around you…????). Share it and hope Wendy writes more. Clicker

Interesting book. The clicker idea is fascinating. You can train yourself like a dog. I'm sure you've heard of dog training clickers. I would buy one of those instead of her's. You can get dog clickers less expensive. I'm still learning. I haven't quite trained myself yet. You would think that humans are smarter than dogs. If I'm smarter then a dog, the clicker might not do it. Unless with the clicker you're training your animal brain. Or as she calls it the bratty brain.

Lots of room for improvement

Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless. Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning. A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.
