Great How-to book!

I have been a YouTube partner since 2009 and earning money ever since. I make a living from my videos both through advertising that shows up on my videos and by promoting products and services. This book I thought would not have much information for me. However I was incorrect. The book has many tips and tricks on how to be more successful. Yes the book is short but it's straight to the point and gives you what you need to get started!

About the Author
Jack Gilbert is the author of five volumes of poetry. His many awards include the Yale Younger Poets prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His second collection, Monolithos, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He served in various countries as a lecturer for the U.S. State Department and has taught at Rikkyo University (Tokyo), San Francisco State University, Smith College, and elsewhere.

Ave Atque Vale: The Passing of a Great American Poet

Jack Gilbert died on November 11, 2012 in Berkeley, California after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was 87. His poetry span covered over fifty years and in the midst of poems of personal grief and mourning, there are still many others that celebrate the virtue of solitude and distance from society. From the many cycles of his life, his joys and his tragedies, he was able to celebrate the basic joys of everyday experience. As so appropriately been said, `Whether his subject is his boyhood in working-class Pittsburgh, the women he has loved throughout his life, or the bittersweet losses we all face, Gilbert is by turns subtle and majestic: he steals up on the odd moment of grace; he rises to crescendos of emotion.'

FAILING AND FLYING

Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew.

It's the same when love comes to an end,

or the marriage fails and people say

they knew it was a mistake, that everybody

said it would never work. That she was 

old enough to know better. But anything

worth doing is worth doing badly.

Like being there by that summer ocean

on the other side of the island while

love was fading out of her, the stars 

burning so extravagantly those nights that

anyone could tell you they would never last.

Every morning she was asleep in my bed

like a visitation, the gentleness in her

like antelope standing in the dawn mist.

Each afternoon I watched her coming back

through the hot stony field after swimming,

the sea light behind her and the huge sky

on the other side of that. Listened to her

while we ate lunch. How can they say 

the marriage failed? Like the people who

came back from Provence (when it was Provence)

and said it was pretty but the food was greasy.

I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell,

but just coming to the end of his triumph.

IN DISPRAISE OF POETRY

When the King of Siam disliked a courtier,
He gave him a beautiful white elephant.
The miracle beast deserved such ritual
That to care for him properly meant ruin.
Yet to care for him improperly was worse.
It appears the gift could not be refused.

So Very Rich

Jack Gilbert's Collected Poems are so very rich that individual poems almost have to be read with a certain amount of space between them. They shock with their juxtapositions of the lyrical and prosaic. But in the end the brilliance overcomes the petty faults that derail us for a few seconds. The poems bounce us back and forth between the metaphoric, surreal, philosophical, and the biograpical. The syntax and punctuation are strange, phrases sometimes being punctuated as sentences. The object at the end of one sentence often becomes the subject at the beginning of another, with or without a period separating them. There is an insinuating pleasure in these poems as we sometimes read them one way and then another. One feels as if something important is being said, that a very rich life has been explored and left at the reader's disposal, who is very happy for this gift.

If you enjoy the poetry of Wallace Stevens or Clarles Simic you might very well enjoy Jack Gilbert.

Wow! I recommend that you give this author a chance!! I am impressed!!

I promised myself that I would take a break from reading before I got started on the second book, Blurred Truth. I just couldn't do it. I am so involved in this book, getting the story from Ryan's point of view is almost better than the first book, which was Natalie's point of view.
I am 31% percent into the book and already I want to give it five stars. For me, it's that good. I know Ryan has secrets and it is going to be very interesting just to find out what they are!
Wow! I can't speak for anyone else, of course, but I LOVED every second of this book!! Chapter 31 had me saying, "oh, heck, no!" at the very beginning and I was almost afraid to keep going, but I am so glad I did. The ending was perfect!
Blurred Lies and Blurred Truth are the only books that I have found from this author, but I sure hope there are more to come in the future!!

Another good yarn from a craftsman of the imaginary conflict scenario. Even at this late date the work holds up well.

In cop books we have a genre called the police procedural in which the author explains the details of police work, how the crime scene is preserved and evidence taken, how interviews are conducted and so on. People enjoy this. Harold Coyle takes his readers on a long journey through the thousand aspects of what I will call a Military Procedural, if I may. He skillfully brings together different aspects of the military establishment for our understanding and entertainment. Some authors simply point the guns at the enemy and let loose. Not Coyle.
As an example I refer you to his description of a trans-Atlantic flight by a flock of Army helicopters. He carefully introduces his characters and lets them illustrate their function in the unit. He does not tell us what the pilots do. He lets the pilots show us what they do, a vital difference for the reader. And Coyle knows his stuff. He writes, we believe.
He also manages to work in a compelling and believable love story, no small task amongst the mayhem of the story.
He published this novel, a military thriller of the first rank, in 1990. At that time we could have a genuine US Navy battleship in the story without drifting off into fantastic land, and he doesn't let us down. But his tanks, his helos and aircraft, his missiles on land, air or sea have an authenticity that we crave and cherish.

More, servicable pulp fantasy in the continuing adventures of Rigel Starborn

Queen of Stars is the second book in The Starfolk series by Dave Duncan. This book is definitely a niche book for those who like bubblegum fantasy and certainly suffers from similar pitfalls as the first book in the series, King of Swords. However, in the end it is a quick read and even enjoyable.

This book follows the further adventures of Rigel halfling, who is now well established in the Starlands as the chief of security for his beloved Queen Talitha. As such, he must look after Izar, the mischievous, young heir apparent. Rigel is still in love with Talitha but they cannot consummate their love, given that Talitha is queen and it is forbidden for a true Starborn (for the uninitiated, a pure elf) to have relations with a halfling.

As the book opens, Rigel and Izar go together to save Avior, an earthbound halfling who knows nothing of her true origins. This should have been a routine mission, but was really a trap set by the evil Prince Vildiar and his halfling army led by Hadar.

After narrowly escaping to an isolated backwater of the Starlands with Avior, Rigel and Izar take a somewhat desultory path back to Starland civilization and an even more circuitous pathway to thwart Vildiar's plans. There are prophesies and guilt curses and minor skirmishes galor and the ride, if not terribly exciting at most times, is colorful.

Still, Queen of Stars has that book-two-in-a-series, middle-book-stretch feeling. The Starlands are now old hat for Rigel and the newbee, Avior, is dumped at a remote location (possibly waiting for a comeback in book #3) so we don't have a lot of time to marvel at her wonder of the whole, magical place. True, a lot of significant events happen, but mostly at the end of the book. There are few, unpredictable plot twists, and the plot meanders for most of the book, kind of just gawking at the scenery.

The first book was overly focused on adolescent lust and I had thought that this one would avoid this pitfall. No such luck. Although less focused on anatomical differences between boys and girls in the first 1/3 of the book, thereafter we are privy to any number of somewhat frightening Starland couplings and even a randy, ithyphallic Satyr. Oh, my.

As before, I haven't read much Dave Duncan before, but in spite of this series he seems to be a good writer. My guess is that this is his release between books of more serious fantasy fiction.

If you haven't read book one, there's no reason to pick up book two. However, if you've read the first book, you might be interested to see how things turn out. I didn't think I'd be up for another voyage in the Starlands but here I am. And although I can't rate this book all that high, I seem to be a sucker for Duncan's Starfolk Series and can't guarantee that I won't be back for book three.

More adventures for Rigel in the Starlands

QUEEN OF STARS is the second in Dave Duncan’s STARFOLK fantasy series; the first is KING OF SWORDS. With this the second in a series, some knowledge of the characters and setting from having read the previous book is quite helpful, if not essential. The intended audience would be older teenagers because of some situations and word choices.

Rigel, the main character, is about twenty years old; in KING OF SWORDS he discovers something that he always wondered about – exactly what his ancestry is. He’s a mix of Starborn and human. The Starfolk don’t really accept him, but he doesn’t want to go back to his earlier home in Canada. He has a bracelet that, should he be threatened, becomes a sword, which cannot be removed by Starfolk or human, for as long as he lives.

Rigel’s work supervising the young imp Izar continues; he is, in a way, both Izar's bodyguard and "manny." Izar seems to find mischief and trouble. The forbidden romance introduced in KING OF SWORDS continues in QUEEN OF STARS; political intrigue in the Starworld abounds; and Rigel sees a possibility of his fate.

The characters are still drawn quite well; Izar the imp, Rigel’s charge, is as funny as he was in the first book. Readers do have to suspend some disbelief about the characters in the Starlands, however, because they mature much more slowly than humans and live for thousands of years before “fading.”

Is this second book the last of the series? Maybe not. The ending of this book does satisfy but it leaves things open enough for the series to continue should Duncan choose to do so.

Those who have read KING OF SWORDS will want to read QUEEN OF STARS to see more of the beings of the Starlands.

Good Saturday 'camp'. A bit of a slow start, and a bit strained around the edges.

If you read the first book, the cast of characters is back for a second romp through a very campy alternate reality of the Starfolk realm or what humans have called 'Elves' in mythology around the world. Duncan clearly has fun in these books using familiar creatures from mythology in a light hearted way. I enjoy this.

There were a couple of problems though. Izar is tiresome through the first half of the book at least. The whole babysitting aspect to the books gets more tiresome in this sequel since you don't have the freshness of the world building of the first book. Duncan also took A LOT of time introducing the world to people who haven't picked up the first book. Much more then most authors of series. You have to balance this out for new readers and continuing readers and I think Duncan erred on reviewing things overly much for people who read the first book.

There is also a good bit of sex and sexual innuendo that just seems out of place overall with the campy feel of the book. But I do still like the world and I do like Rigel. The books also made me think. At first the Starfolk actions towards humans seem shocking. Then I thought how we treat our nearest relatives on Earth, the great apes and other primates. Sometimes for meat, often for lab experiments.

In any case readers of the first book will find their favorite characters, And if you like a light hearted none too serious in the vein of a good Saturday serial, you will enjoy this book. Not high fantasy, more fun fantasy with perhaps a few frays along the edges.
